Robert E. Lee that\u2019s been standing for more than 130 years. The deconstruction began Wednesday morning after the state\u2019s Supreme Court upheld two lower court rulings that called for the removal of the Civil War general\u2019s statue.<\/p>\n<p>The removal saw mixed reactions as many suggested it\u2019s an attempt to erase history. \u201cIt\u2019s a good day, and it\u2019s a sad day at the same time,\u201d said Sharon Jennings, a Black woman who has lived in Richmond her entire life. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter what color you are, if you really like history, and you understand what this street has been your whole life and you\u2019ve grown up this way, you\u2019re thinking, \u2018Oh, my God.\u2019 But when you get older, you understand that it does need to come down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Democrat Gov. Ralph Northam was in attendance when the statue came down, saying its removal was a long time coming.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny remnant like this that glorifies the lost cause of the Civil War, it needs to come down,\u201d said the governor. Northam said he hopes this move will represent a \u201cnew era in Virginia.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">WATCH LIVE: As the removal of the Robert E.
