Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) weighed in on the Texas \u201cheartbeat\u201d law, which effectively bans abortions after fetal cardiac activity can be detected (around the sixth week of pregnancy), calling the measure an example of \u201crape culture\u201d and an attack on \u201cmenstruating people\u201d \u2014 a \u201cwoke\u201d term for biological women.<\/p>\n<p>Appearing on Anderson Cooper\u2019s CNN\u2019s program Tuesday night, Ocasio-Cortez first suggested that Texas governor Greg Abbott was \u201cdeeply ignorant\u201d of female anatomy and reproductive processes and that the law was emblematic of \u201crape culture\u201d \u2014 a theory that men have a need to control women and express that through actions and laws affecting women\u2019s reproductive choices.<\/p>\n<p>Ocasio-Cortez, though, despite her apparent belief that Abbott\u2019s law harmed women could not bring herself to use the term \u201cwomen,\u201d instead, dancing around the \u201ctransphobic\u201d concept of immutable biological sex by using the term \u201cmenstruating persons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know if he is familiar with a menstruating person\u2019s body. In fact, I do know that he\u2019s not familiar with a female or menstruating person\u2019s body because if he did, he would know that you don\u2019t have six weeks,\u201d she said, referring to the idea that a pregnancy is dated from the beginning of a woman\u2019s last menstrual cycle, making \u201csix weeks\u201d of pregnancy \u2014 generally when cardiac activity is able to be detected in a developing unborn child \u2014 really that child\u2019s fourth week of life, and two weeks after a woman\u2019s missed period.<\/p>\n<p>Faced with trying to make the point that women would be notably affected by the \u201cheartbeat law\u201d but unable to use the term \u201cwoman,\u201d Ocasio-Cortez plunged ahead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry we have to break down Biology 101 on national television, but in case no one has informed him before in his life, six weeks pregnant means two weeks late for your period,\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cAnd two weeks late on your period for any person \u2014 any person with a menstrual cycle \u2014 can happen if you\u2019re stressed, if your diet changes, or for really no reason at all. So you don\u2019t have six weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ocasio-Cortez ignored the idea that a \u201cmenstruating person\u201d who was experiencing a two-week-late period could take an at-home pregnancy or get a more comprehensive exam at a clinic in order to rule out stress and diet.<\/p>\n<p>The term \u201cmenstruating person,\u201d of course, refers to transgender individuals and those who claim to be \u201cnon-binary,\u201d meaning they may be biologically female but do not identify fully as either \u201cmale\u201d or \u201cfemale.\u201d Women who have transitioned to male and those who choose not to ascribe themselves to the gender binary, the theory goes, could still have periods and get pregnant, but are not \u201cwomen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She doubled down on the argument just hours later on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Supreme Court and GOP\u2019s coordinated attack on Roe v Wade isn\u2019t only about abortion rights \u2013 it\u2019s also an attack on our overall right to privacy. Roe v Wade allowed SCOTUS to overturn state laws that criminalized private, consensual acts that especially targeted LGBT+ people,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<p>She then doubled down on the idea that women aren\u2019t the only ones who menstruate: \u201c<span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">The gutting of Roe v Wade imperils every <\/span><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-b88u0q r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">menstruating<\/span> <span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-b88u0q r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">person<\/span><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\"> in the US, every <\/span><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-b88u0q r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">person<\/span><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\"> who engages in sex, and every <\/span><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-b88u0q r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">person<\/span><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\"> who values our constitutional right to privacy.
