Gavin Newsom\u2019s political situation is \u201cdangerous,\u201d Arnold Schwarzenegger told CNN\u2019s Dana Bash on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s millions of people out there that are dissatisfied, dissatisfied with the way the corona was handled, dissatisfied with the fires,\u201d the former two-term governor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/09\/08\/politics\/arnold-schwarzenegger-gavin-newsom-california-recall-podcast\/index.html\">said<\/a>. Schwarzenegger compared Newsom\u2019s election prospects to those of Gray Davis, who the action star replaced as California governor in 2003. Davis is the only governor in state history to be recalled.<\/p>\n<p>Davis was recalled amid an economic recession and rolling blackouts, a political situation that Schwarzenegger described as \u201cexactly the same\u201d as today\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe atmosphere is exactly the same (as) when I ran,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to Newsom\u2019s COVID-19 lockdown <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/states\/california\/story\/2020\/10\/30\/newsom-sends-his-children-back-to-school-classrooms-in-california-1332811\">policies<\/a>, which he has publicly <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/11\/13\/gavin-newsom-reportedly-attends-dinner-party-that-went-against-californias-coronavirus-advice\/\">flouted<\/a>, Schwarzenegger cited the state\u2019s trouble managing its large homeless population. California has the <a href=\"https:\/\/worldpopulationreview.com\/state-rankings\/homeless-population-by-state\">most<\/a> homeless people of any state in the U.S., and the third-most per 100,000 residents, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/727847\/homelessness-rate-in-the-us-by-state\/\">according<\/a> to Statista. Advocates have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/money\/2021\/06\/08\/1003982733\/squalor-behind-the-golden-gate-confronting-californias-homelessness-crisis\">cited<\/a> the state\u2019s refusal to build new housing as a key component of the crisis. The average cost of a California home reached $600,000 in 2019, more than double the national average, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/graphics\/2019-california-housing-crisis\/\">according<\/a> to Bloomberg. <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2019\/11\/04\/apple-california-housing-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>(RELATED: Apple Pledges $2.5 Billion To Help Combat California\u2019s Housing Crisis)<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI drive by homeless people every day when I go to Gold\u2019s Gym and I talk to some of them. (Photo by Justin Sullivan\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Schwarzenegger also <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/03\/16\/gavin-newsom-right-wing-extremists-behind-recall\/\">pushed<\/a> back on Newsom\u2019s messaging that his recall was spearheaded by \u201cmembers of the Three Percenters \u2014 the right wing militia group, the Proud Boys\u2026 folks that quite literally enthusiastically support Qanon conspiracies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlmost half of the people that are running are not Republicans. So it is incorrect to say to the people that it is a Republican power grab,\u201d the \u201cTerminator\u201d star said.<\/p>\n<p>California\u2019s recall process is <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.openedition.org\/siecles\/1109?lang=en\">governed<\/a> by a 1911 law proposed by Gov. Hiram Johnson, a progressive Republican who believed that voters should be able to remove an elected official before the official\u2019s term ended.<\/p>\n<p>Schwarzenegger <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20141021000656\/http:\/\/www.sos.ca.gov\/elections\/sov\/2003-special\/ssov\/recall_ques_sum.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">won<\/a> the 2003 recall election with 48% of the vote.<\/p>\n<p>A FiveThirtyEight moving <a href=\"https:\/\/projects.fivethirtyeight.com\/california-recall-polls\/\">average<\/a> showed a virtual tie between the keep and remove options for Newsom as recently as Aug. 11, but the governor has since opened up a 12 point lead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very dangerous for him because you got to take this stuff seriously. For too long, they didn\u2019t take it seriously.
