It\u2019s also been shown to&nbsp;shorten the duration of symptoms by four days.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, awareness of the treatment is abysmal \u2014 and that\u2019s in large part due to the efforts \u2014 <em>or lack of effort<\/em> \u2014 from the Biden administration, most notably President Biden himself.<\/p>\n<p>You likely first heard of such treatment from former President Donald Trump, who famously had the antibody infusion when he was infected with COVID&nbsp;and made a quick turnaround. At the time, the treatment was not yet available to the public, and the media bashed Trump for calling the treatment a \u201ccure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since then, the treatment has been authorized for public use and has&nbsp;been widely praised by many doctors, patients, and public health officials \u2014 including some from the federal government. But word of the treatment and its <a href=\"https:\/\/protect-public.hhs.gov\/pages\/therapeutics-distribution\">availability<\/a>&nbsp;(which you can view, <a href=\"https:\/\/protect-public.hhs.gov\/pages\/therapeutics-distribution\">here<\/a>) is just not getting out fast enough.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what you need to know.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What<\/strong><strong> is monoclonal&nbsp;antibody treatment?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<div readability=\"13.380177514793\">\n<div data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" readability=\"21.804733727811\">\n<p data-el=\"text\">The antibody treatment is essentially an infusion of supplemental antibodies that help your body fight off COVID \u2014 and fast, according to medical experts. University of Alabama at Birmingham&nbsp;Professor Turner Overton <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uab.edu\/news\/health\/item\/12241-five-questions-about-monoclonal-antibodies\">explained<\/a> it this way: Your \u201cimmune system takes two to three weeks to make good antibodies,\u201d but \u201cmonoclonal antibodies are supplemental antibodies that can be administered early in the course of infection \u2014 the first 10 days after symptoms commence \u2014 to rapidly bind and kill the COVID virus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-el=\"text\">Medical experts suggest that the treatment should be given to COVID-positive patients during the first ten days of symptoms.<\/p>\n<p data-el=\"text\">Health officials have emphasized that vaccination is still the best option for Americans in reducing a patient\u2019s chances of hospitalization and death.&nbsp;\u201cThe monoclonal antibodies are not as durable as the vaccine,\u201d Dr. Overton said. \u201cThe vaccine trains a healthy immune system to protect from a future infection, and the protection can last much longer.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Doctors and health&nbsp;officials&nbsp;rave<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the golden goose, okay, this is what we need, and we\u2019ve got a short window to get these people treated,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/news\/2021\/08\/monoclonal-antibodies-the-answer-to-alabamas-covid-surge-doctors-say.html\">said<\/a> Dr. David Thrasher, a pulmonologist from Alabama. \u201cThis is the only thing in COVID that I\u2019ve seen that is not controversial.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is incredibly effective if given early enough,\u201d Dr. Overton <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uab.edu\/news\/health\/item\/12241-five-questions-about-monoclonal-antibodies\">said<\/a> of the antibody treatment, adding that the care is \u201clifesaving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Dr. Sujesh Pillai, Chief of Staff for Huntsville Memorial, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kbtx.com\/2021\/09\/01\/huntsville-doctor-says-antibody-treatment-shows-signs-preventing-severe-covid-19\/\">said<\/a> the hospital administered more than 50 infusions in a matter of two weeks, and only one person had to be admitted to the hospital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cWhen you get the infusion treatment, it\u2019s a one-hour IV infusion that we do in the hospital. You\u2019re not admitted. You go home right after it\u2019s done,\u201d Pillai said. \u201cIt\u2019s very well tolerated. It has been shown to have about 70 to 80% chance of preventing you from developing severe COVID or ending up coming to the hospital at all and helping you get a full recovery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Erin McCreary, director of stewardship innovation at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, called the treatment \u201cabsolutely the standard of care for COVID-19. It is my hope that clinics know that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"e2ma-style\">\u201cIt is absolutely vital that we continue expanding access to this life-saving treatment, which works hand in hand with vaccination,\u201d said <\/span><span class=\"e2ma-style\">Flagler County Health Officer Bob Snyder.<b>&nbsp;\u201c<\/b>I received monoclonal antibody therapy within 24 hours of testing positive for COVID-19 and was fully recovered within 48 hours of the treatment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"e2ma-style\">Dr. Samuel L. Jacobs, a physician at the Florida Department of Health in Broward County, noted, \u201c<\/span><span class=\"e2ma-style\">I had received my first dose of the vaccine prior to contracting COVID and I think the monoclonal antibody treatment saved my life and I\u2019m very grateful. If someone tests positive for COVID and especially if they\u2019re having symptoms, I strongly stress the importance of getting monoclonal antibodies basically as a life-saving measure.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<div readability=\"9.5\">\n<div data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" readability=\"14\">\n<p class=\"font--article-body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md\" data-el=\"text\">\u201cThe monoclonal antibodies work,\u201d said Marcella Nunez-Smith, chair of the government\u2019s COVID-19 Health Equity Task Force. \u201cThey are safe, they\u2019re free, they keep people out of the hospital, and help keep them alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe Maryland Department of Health (MDH) is actively encouraging physicians and patients to consider monoclonal antibody treatment, which has been shown to reduce the severity of symptoms and prevent hospitalization in people with mild or moderate symptoms of COVID-19,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/health.maryland.gov\/newsroom\/Pages\/Maryland-Department-of-Health-encourages-physicians-and-patients-to-consider-monoclonal-antibody-treatment-for-COVID-19.aspx\">reads<\/a> a press release from MDH.<\/p>\n<p data-el=\"text\"><strong>President Joe Biden has not been pushing the effective treatment&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<div readability=\"9.2346368715084\">\n<div data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" readability=\"13.608938547486\">\n<p class=\"font--article-body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md\" data-el=\"text\">President Joe Biden has not promoted the antibody treatment himself, though there have been a few instances where officials from the government have praised the treatment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font--article-body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md\" data-el=\"text\">The Washington Post last month <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/covid-monoclonal-abbott\/2021\/08\/19\/a39a0b5e-0029-11ec-a664-4f6de3e17ff0_story.html\">criticized<\/a> Biden\u2019s effort to get the word out about the care.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font--article-body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md\" data-el=\"text\">In mid-August, Nunez-Smith said the treatment is effective and helps \u201ckeep people alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div readability=\"9\">\n<div data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" readability=\"13\">\n<p class=\"font--article-body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md\" data-el=\"text\">\u201cHer statement marked one of the few times since the Biden administration took office that the antibodies have been promoted by the response team,\u201d the Post slammed. \u201cA review of its 52 briefings or news conferences shows they were discussed mostly when Anthony S. Fauci, the team\u2019s infectious-disease specialist, offered a research update.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div readability=\"16.5\">\n<div data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" readability=\"28\">\n<p class=\"font--article-body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md\" data-el=\"text\">\u201cFor the administration, mum\u2019s the word on monoclonal antibodies, rapid home tests, high-quality masks .\u2009.\u2009. anything except vaccines,\u201d Eric Topol, founder and director of the Scripps Research Translational Institute, told the Post. \u201cWhich is wrong, since we need every tool in the kit to effectively take on delta; we\u2019re not doing that well at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Former FDA commissioner Mark McClellan told the Post in August that \u201caccess is still uneven and way below the number of people who could potentially benefit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Biden administration has taken \u201csome very important steps,\u201d McClellan said, but notably admitted that \u201cthere is still a big gap, an opportunity to get more people treated and get control of the pandemic, especially with hospitals getting full in many parts of the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\">\n<div readability=\"11.5\">\n<div data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" readability=\"18\">\n<p>The most prominent company providing the treatment is Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, who\u2019ve teamed up with the federal government to pass along the treatment to Americans for free. And the extent of their patient reach is, to put it bluntly, bad.<\/p>\n<p>In late August, the company&nbsp;said it was reaching fewer than 30% of eligible patients \u2014 and that was up big-time from its&nbsp;numbers in July, when Regeneron reached fewer than 5% of eligible patients.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div readability=\"17.356858846918\">\n<div data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" readability=\"30.146123260437\">\n<p data-el=\"text\"><strong>Why&nbsp;isn\u2019t the treatment being promoted properly?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Last week, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), who is without question <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flgov.com\/2021\/08\/31\/patients-and-medical-professionals-in-florida-commend-governor-desantis-efforts-to-increase-access-to-monoclonal-antibody-treatments\/\">leading the way to promote both vaccine and early care like antibody treatment<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VGSJJvWuFRI&amp;feature=emb_title\">suggested<\/a>&nbsp;some public health officials bypassed promotion of the treatment in an effort to drive behavior. Basically, officials were scared if Americans knew about the highly effective treatment, they might forgo a vaccine.
