Fauci insisted so during multiple congressional hearings, resulting in tense exchanges with Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-rand-paul\">Rand Paul<\/a> (R-Ky.), who is also a doctor.<\/p>\n<p>According to Dr. Richard Ebright, a molecular biologist and professor at Rutgers University, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/21055989-understanding-risk-bat-coronavirus-emergence-grant-notice\">the new documents<\/a>, which include grant proposals that had never been made public, show that the grants to EcoHealth meet the federal definition of gain of function research.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe materials confirm the grants supported the construction\u2014in Wuhan\u2014of novel chimeric SARS-related coronaviruses that combined a spike gene from one coronavirus with genetic information from another coronavirus, and confirmed the resulting viruses could infect human cells,\u201d Ebright wrote on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>Both Ebright and Paul say the new documents confirm that Fauci was not truthful with the public regarding the grants, with Ebright also charging that Collins lied as well.<\/p>\n<p>Collins and Fauci were \u201cuntruthful\u201d when they claimed that the NIH\u00a0did not support gain of function research or potential pandemic pathogen enhancement at the Wuhan lab, Ebright wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Paul also reacted on social media.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSurprise surprise\u2014Fauci lied again. And I was right about his agency funding novel Coronavirus research at Wuhan. Roger Marshall (R-Kan.), another doctor, wondered how people could still trust Fauci.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEither he\u2019s completely misinformed or has intentionally lied to Congress &amp; the American people multiple times,\u201d he alleged.<\/p>\n<p>Fauci and Republicans\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/sen-paul-clashes-anew-with-fauci-over-nih-funding-to-wuhan-lab-gain-of-function-research-was-going-on_3910059.html\">have clashed<\/a> during congressional hearings on multiple occasions. In July, Paul said Fauci lied to Congress when he said two months prior that the NIH did not fund gain of function research. He asked Fauci to retract his previous comments.<\/p>\n<p>Fauci, visibly shaking with anger, refused, charging that he did not lie and accusing him of not knowing what he was talking about.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after the hearing, Paul <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/sen-paul-sending-criminal-referral-of-fauci-to-department-of-justice_3911630.html\">sent a criminal referral of Fauci<\/a> to the Department of Justice.<\/p>\n<p>The newly disclosed documents \u201cmake it abundantly clear that he needs to be held accountable,\u201d the senator added on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>People convicted of lying to Congress can be imprisoned for up to five years.<\/p>\n<p>Fauci previously admitted he misinformed members of the public about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/fauci-in-2020-masks-from-drug-stores-not-really-effective-against-ccp-virus_3841761.html\">efficacy of masks<\/a> out of concern that there wouldn\u2019t be enough masks for healthcare workers.<\/p>\n<p>Spokespersons for the NIH and Fauci\u2019s agency did not respond to requests for comment.
