Last year, Border Patrol agents found the remains of 253 people near the U.S.-Mexico border. This year through July, agents have already discovered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/08\/24\/us\/migrants-deaths-texas-surge.html\">383<\/a> people \u2014 a 151% increase.<\/p>\n<p>The number of deaths has increased across the entire flank of America\u2019s nearly 2,000-mile border with Mexico. In 12 southern Texas counties, the number of remains discovered more than tripled this year, from 45 in all of 2020 to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/videos\/politics\/2021\/06\/09\/border-migrant-deaths-flores-pkg-lead-vpx.cnn\">128<\/a> by this June. In Arizona\u2019s border sector, officials found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/politics\/more-migrant-deaths-recorded-in-heat-along-arizona-border\">127<\/a> separate sets of human remains by this year\u2019s midway point \u2014 more than in all of 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Officials gave several reasons for the spike in the death toll. The sheer number of people making the dangerous journey has increased dramatically during 2021, especially since President Joe Biden\u2019s inauguration. Every month of the Biden-Harris administration has seen an increase in the number of illegal immigrants, reaching <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/illegal-immigration-reaches-near-historic-high-1-million-border-crossings-this-year-and-counting\">historic levels<\/a>. Some 212,672 people attempted to enter the U.S. illegally in July 2021, the second-highest number in U.S. history behind March 2000, when agents apprehended&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbp.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/assets\/documents\/2020-Jan\/U.S.%20Border%20Patrol%20Monthly%20Apprehensions%20%28FY%202000%20-%20FY%202019%29_1.pdf\">220,063<\/a>&nbsp;illegal immigrants. In all, there have been a total of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbp.gov\/newsroom\/stats\/southwest-land-border-encounters\">1,331,822<\/a> encounters with illegal immigrants this fiscal year, which started in October 2020. The sheer increase in numbers means more people will die.<\/p>\n<p>Gangs of human smugglers, or coyotes, have changed the way they lead caravans: Instead of having foot guides personally lead large groups of people through the desert, they now communicate via cell phone. Ambiguous or misunderstood instructions can cause people to get lost.<\/p>\n<p>This summer\u2019s high temperatures also claimed lives. The vast majority of deaths came from hyperthermia \u2014 commonly referred to as heat stroke \u2014 as well as dehydration, common symptoms of crossing the desert on summer days when the temperature frequently reached 110 degrees. Survivors have often been found \u201cdelirious\u201d or wandering around in circles.<\/p>\n<p>Human smugglers also abandon those who cannot keep up with the group or use children to distract Border Patrol agents while the rest of the party escapes. In June, agents found a <a href=\"https:\/\/fox5sandiego.com\/news\/border-report\/5-year-old-girl-found-wandering-alone-near-border-in-san-ysidro\/\">five-year-old girl<\/a> from Guatemala wandering alone near California\u2019s Tijuana River.<\/p>\n<p>Just attempting to save those attempting to enter the U.S. illegally is consuming a larger amount of federal agents\u2019 time and U.S. taxpayers\u2019 dollars. The Border Patrol has conducted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbp.gov\/newsroom\/stats\/cbp-enforcement-statistics\">10,275<\/a> rescue missions this fiscal year \u2014 more than 2019 and 2020 combined, sometimes riding on horseback into the most remote parts of the desert. The situation has become so dire that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.12news.com\/article\/news\/politics\/border-patrol-responds-to-record-number-of-migrant-rescue-calls-along-us-mexico-border\/75-8ac4900a-b490-4518-a72d-ed90f64185d5\">250 of the 3,700<\/a> Border Patrol agents in the Tucson sector are EMTs or paramedics. That means roughly 7% of the workforce is dedicated to saving the lives of illegal aliens.<\/p>\n<p>The number of illegal immigrants in danger also puts U.S. Border patrol agents\u2019 lives at risk. \u201cEach rescue means that someone almost died, and our agents risk themselves to save them,\u201d Stephanie Anaya, Border Patrol Assistant Chief Patrol Agent with the Del Rio Sector, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kens5.com\/mobile\/article\/news\/special-reports\/at-the-border\/record-number-of-migrant-deaths-reported-this-year-in-del-rio\/273-4353ba4d-7df7-49e6-9f9c-01adcf26a94a\">told<\/a> San Antonio\u2019s KENS5-TV.&nbsp;More than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbp.gov\/newsroom\/national-media-release\/cbp-releases-july-2021-operational-update\">9,800<\/a> employees of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection have tested positive for COVID-19, and 35 have died since the beginning of the pandemic \u2014 \u201ctwo in the last month,\u201d according to the CBP.<\/p>\n<p>Yet U.S. agents vow to redouble their efforts to save as many lives as possible. They plan to erect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbp.gov\/newsroom\/local-media-release\/rgv-agents-deploy-life-saving-rescue-beacons\">48 rescue beacons<\/a>&nbsp;near the border by October and have already set up nearly 1,000 emergency placards, which give migrants instructions on how to call 911, in the Rio Grande Valley alone.<\/p>\n<p>And, most importantly, they\u2019re telling would-be migrants not to come to the United States illegally, possibly losing their lives in the sands of Mexico, Texas, or Arizona. Del Rio Sector Border Patrol Chief Austin Skero, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kens5.com\/mobile\/article\/news\/special-reports\/at-the-border\/record-number-of-migrant-deaths-reported-this-year-in-del-rio\/273-4353ba4d-7df7-49e6-9f9c-01adcf26a94a\">said<\/a>, \u201cThat is the message to the undocumented migrant population, is: Don\u2019t cross. It is not worth risking your life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpeaking as a physician, there is a safer way to do it than coming across the border,\u201d said Dr. Corinne Stern, a medical examiner in Webb County, Texas. \u201cEven if you say to yourself, \u2018It\u2019s worth my life. I\u2019m willing to risk my life,\u2019 think about your family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lax border enforcement policies, or political promises of citizenship and social welfare benefits, encourage people to make the deadly trek across the desert. Every inducement encourages migrants to pay human smugglers, potentially get sexually abused, and perhaps lose their lives<i>&nbsp;en route<\/i>&nbsp;to the United States.
