Tom Suozzi, a moderate from Long Island, said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/suozzi.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/suozzi-no-salt-no-deal-will-still-oppose-any-changes-tax-code-unless-cap-salt\">statement<\/a> Tuesday. \u201cI simply cannot stand by while the hardworking people across all of New York are hurting because of the SALT cap.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>SALT deductions were capped at $10,000 in the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which Republicans passed in 2017. They allow taxpayers to deduct taxes already paid to state and local governments, meaning that Americans can deduct more in places where non-federal taxes are higher, including blue states and affluent suburban areas.<\/p>\n<p>Restoring the deduction has the support from <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AndrewSolender\/status\/1382059923530473485?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">most<\/a> of New York\u2019s House delegation, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and Majority Leader <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schumer.senate.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/schumer-and-gillibrand-launch-new-push-to-permanently-restore-new-york-states-full-salt-deduction-with-average-upstate-ny-deduction-of-13k-senators-introduces-legislation-to-allow-upstate-taxpayers-to-fully-deduct-state-and-local-taxes-on-federal-income-returns\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chuck Schumer<\/a>. (Samuel Corum\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Progressives, however, have spoken out <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/05\/10\/bernie-sanders-democrats-tax-cuts-salt-terrible-message\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">against<\/a> removing the cap, labeling it as nothing more than a tax cut for wealthy Americans in blue states.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt sends a terrible, terrible message when you have Republicans telling us that this is a tax break for the rich,\u201d Vermont Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders, the chair of the Senate Budget Committee which authored the $3.5 trillion plan, said in May. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/05\/10\/bernie-sanders-democrats-tax-cuts-salt-terrible-message\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Sen. Sanders Rips One Of Democrats\u2019 Proposed Tax Cuts: \u2018A Terrible, Terrible Message\u2019)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But as of now, language for a full repeal is included in the resolution which both the <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/08\/24\/democrats-house-of-representatives-joe-biden-budget-infrastructure-stalemate-nancy-pelosi-moderates-congress\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">House<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/08\/11\/senate-adopts-democrats-budget-3-5-trillion-congress-bernie-sanders\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Senate<\/a> have advanced.
