Michael McCaul<\/span><\/a><span>, Member of the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Background<\/b><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Following the U.S. departure from Afghanistan, a growing number of NGO\u2019s and other private organizations have stepped up their efforts to evacuate Americans, green card holders, and vulnerable Afghans.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>One group, PlanB, had reportedly organized six charter flights out of Mazar-e Sharif airport in the northern part of the country. However, shortly before the planes were set to depart, the Taliban intervened and held them up.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_283682\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" readability=\"32\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-283682\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-283682\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Taliban-3.jpg\" alt=\"KABUL, AFGHANISTAN - SEPTEMBER 02: Taliban members set checkpoints around Hamid Karzai International Airport in Afghan capital Kabul on September 02, 2021.\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Taliban-3.jpg 688w, https:\/\/dw-wp-production.imgix.net\/2021\/09\/Taliban-3-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\"><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-283682\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Haroon Sabawoon\/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><b>Who\u2019s to blame?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>The Taliban has denied reports that they\u2019re holding the planes hostage, calling such accusations \u201cpropaganda.\u201d However, sources involved in the situation told the Daily Wire the Taliban is in fact responsible, and is seeking payment of \u201ctens of millions of dollars,\u201d among other things.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In an email sent to members of Congress, the State Department acknowledged that flights had been detained by the Taliban, but implied there wasn\u2019t much they could do because all American personnel had been ordered out of the country by the Biden administration.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>One State Department official told the Washington Free Beacon that without an on-the-ground presence, they\u2019re unable to verify whether the planes have Americans on board, making any rescue efforts increasingly difficult.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Remember<\/b><span>: The United States no longer controls the airspace in Afghanistan, making evacuation flights risky.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>2) Report: Majority Of Americans Did Not Pay Taxes In 2020<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>The Topline: <\/b><span>According to a recent report, an estimated 107 million Americans paid no income tax to the federal government in 2020, representing a substantial increase in the number of citizens who are no longer taxpayers.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The Report<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>In 2020, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.taxpolicycenter.org\/taxvox\/covid-19-pandemic-drove-huge-temporary-increase-households-did-not-pay-federal-income-tax\"><span>61%<\/span><\/a><span> of all Americans paid no federal income tax, according to an estimate from the Tax Policy Center \u2013 a 40% increase in one year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The biggest factor in this change was unemployment, as COVID-19 lockdowns put <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketplace.org\/2020\/08\/06\/how-many-americans-unemployed-right-now\/\"><span>tens of millions<\/span><\/a><span> of Americans out of work, meaning they had no income to tax.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Recent changes in the tax code also reduced Americans\u2019 tax liability. In 2022, the share of families paying no federal income tax is projected to fall back to the typical 48%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Taxpayers By Income&nbsp;<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>The top earners pay almost all of the taxes despite <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TYjlNKY7O80\"><span>claims<\/span><\/a><span> that the wealthiest Americans don\u2019t \u201cpay their fair share.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/statistics\/soi-tax-stats-individual-income-tax-rates-and-tax-shares\"><span>most recent IRS data<\/span><\/a><span> from 2018 shows the top 1% of income earners paid more than the bottom 90% percent combined. The top 1% paid <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/taxfoundation.org\/federal-income-tax-data-2021\/\"><span>40%<\/span><\/a><span> of all federal income taxes, while the top 10% paid 71%, and the bottom 50% of taxpayers paid less than 3%.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Taxes And Political Views<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>The Pew Research Center found that 60% of families who made less than $30,000 a year favor a bigger government with more spending; 62%<\/span> <span>of families making more than $75,000 a year favor a smaller government with less spending.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Remember<\/b><span>: Most Americans pay many other taxes. In 2020, Americans paid <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/datalab.usaspending.gov\/americas-finance-guide\/revenue\/categories\/\"><span>$1.3 trillion<\/span><\/a><span> in federal withholding taxes for Social Security and Medicare; $43 billion in gasoline and diesel taxes; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.taxpolicycenter.org\/briefing-book\/what-are-major-federal-excise-taxes-and-how-much-money-do-they-raise\"><span>$10 billion<\/span><\/a><span> in taxes on alcohol; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbo.gov\/budget-options\/56869\"><span>$1 a pack<\/span><\/a><span> in cigarette taxes, which doesn\u2019t include taxes, tolls, and fees from the state and local government, down to the township and school district level.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>3) Theranos Trial Begins<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>The Topline: <\/b><span>T<\/span><span>he trial of former billionaire and Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes began last week after Holmes was indicted on multiple charges of federal fraud and conspiracy.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The Theranos Case<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>For years, Holmes portrayed Theranos and their blood testing machines as breakthrough devices that would revolutionize the medical industry. She claimed her machines could run hundreds of tests with just a finger prick, eliminating the need for painful needles. She also said these tests could help people detect potential future health problems and save lives.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>However, her claims were untrue. Theranos\u2019 machines didn\u2019t work properly and could only run a small number of tests and the tests were highly inaccurate, leading some patients to believe they had serious illnesses when they didn\u2019t.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Theranos was using traditional blood analyzers to come up with many of its results to make it look like their machines were accurate.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The company had a high turnover rate for employees. She was able to get powerful people like Henry Kissinger and James Mattis to join her board, and she convinced Rupert Murdoch to invest over $100 million in the company.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Holmes Charged<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Holmes was charged with fraud, and court documents unsealed on August 28th show she is planning to accuse former Theranos president Ramesh \u201cSunny\u201d Balwani \u2013 with whom she had a romantic relationship \u2013 of physical and sexual abuse. She plans to claim Sunny controlled how she ate and dressed, monitored her communications, and threw things at her, which she says impaired her judgment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Other Stories We\u2019re Tracking<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Public opinion of Biden tumbles<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>President Biden\u2019s approval ratings have dipped in the wake of the Afghanistan withdrawal. As of this week, aggregate pollster RealClearPolitics logged President Biden\u2019s average approval at 45% with 49% disapproving. Pollster FiveThirtyEight logged the president\u2019s approval at 46% with 48% disapproving.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>New Zealand cracks down on people skirting quarantine rules<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>New Zealand authorities recently announced that they arrested a man who escaped a quarantine hotel after testing positive for Covid, and that he could face a fine or jail time. The man was arrested about six miles from the hotel, which he left so he could return home. Officials say he was \u201con the run\u201d for 12 hours.
