The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) handles the approval of vaccines, not the NIH.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The FDA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/fda-approves-first-covid-19-vaccine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">approved<\/a> Pfizer-BioNTech\u2019s COVID-19 vaccine for use among people ages 16 and older Aug. 23. Following the vaccine\u2019s approval, Facebook posts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/carl.brown.144\/videos\/223762609683396\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">have surfaced<\/a> claiming Grady, who <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicalcenter.nih.gov\/meet-our-doctors\/cgrady.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">works<\/a> for the NIH, is involved in the process of approving such vaccines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone knows who this is, right? This is Christine Grady. She is the head of NIH, and anybody who knows about NIH knows NIH are the people who approve which jabs the FDA are gonna approve for vaccination on humans, right?\u201d the person <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/carl.brown.144\/videos\/223762609683396\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in the video<\/a> alleges. The person goes on to claim, \u201cSo Dr. Fauci\u2019s wife is the person who approves vaccinations for the FDA.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The video\u2019s claims, however, don\u2019t hold up under scrutiny. For starters, Grady is not the head of the NIH, but rather the <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicalcenter.nih.gov\/meet-our-doctors\/cgrady.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">chief of Bioethics<\/a> at the NIH Clinical Center. Dr. Francis Collins has served as the director of the NIH since 2009, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/about-nih\/who-we-are\/nih-director\/biographical-sketch-francis-s-collins-md-phd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">his biography<\/a> on the agency\u2019s website. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/05\/03\/fact-check-fda-not-authorize-approve-covid-19-vaccine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Will The FDA Not Authorize Or Approve Any COVID-19 Vaccine?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The NIH is not the agency that grants emergency use authorization or approval for vaccines. Rather, the FDA is the one that has the regulatory authority to do so, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/basics\/test-approve.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website<\/a>. The FDA has \u201coversight of the safety, effectiveness and quality of vaccines that are used in the United States,\u201d the agency <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/vaccines-blood-biologics\/development-approval-process-cber\/vaccine-development-101\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">says<\/a> on its own website.<\/p>\n<p>Vaccines go through an approval process that includes, among other steps, conducting clinical trials, submitting a Biologics License Application to the FDA and presenting findings to the FDA\u2019s Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/basics\/test-approve.html#approval\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CDC website<\/a>.
