Later in the day, Army Colonel Mamadi Doumbouya appeared on television and declared that the constitution was invalid and that the country would chart a new path forward.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIf you see the state of our roads, if you see the state of our hospitals, you realize that after 72 years, it\u2019s time to wake up,\u201d said Doumbouya, reports the Associated Press. \u201cWe have to wake up.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Conde, 83, became the country\u2019s first democratically-elected president in 2010, but since then has declared that constitutional term limits no longer apply to him. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/africa\/heavy-gunfire-heard-guinea-capital-conakry-reuters-witness-2021-09-05\/\"><span>Reuters<\/span><\/a><span>, the country\u2019s defense ministry issued a statement Sunday saying they had fought back an attack, making it unclear who was actually in charge of the government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Doumbouya has vowed to rewrite the constitution, which was approved back in 2010.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Biden administration issued a statement Sunday declaring \u201cviolence\u201d and \u201cextra-constitutional measures\u201d would only erode the country\u2019s future prospects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThese actions could limit the ability of the United States and Guinea\u2019s other international partners to support the country as it navigates a path toward national unity and a brighter future for the Guinean people,\u201d said State Department spokesman Ned Price.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe urge all parties to forgo violence and any efforts not supported by the Constitution and stand by the rule of law. We reiterate our encouragement of a process of national dialogue to address concerns sustainably and transparently to enable a peaceful and democratic way forward for Guinea to realize its full potential,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>With the situation on the ground still uncertain, a curfew has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/09\/05\/africa\/guinea-coup-intl\/index.html\"><span>reportedly<\/span><\/a><span> been declared.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/12\/26\/world\/africa\/26guinea.html\"><span>The New York Times<\/span><\/a><span>, Guinea has undergone several military coups, including in the 1980s and the late 2000s, when in the course of days, military officials seized control of the country following the death of President Lansana Conte. He himself took control of the country in a coup back in 1984, after the pro-Marxist leader <\/span><span>Ahmed S\u00e9kou Tour\u00e9, the first president of Guinea, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/archive\/local\/1984\/03\/28\/guineas-longtime-president-ahmed-sekou-toure-dies\/18f31685-878c-4759-8028-3bef7fbc568b\/\"><span>died<\/span><\/a><span> while in surgery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cA ruthless ruler who accepted little dissent and no challenges to his rule, Mr. Toure was widely admired in Africa by militants for his often stormy denunciations of the West and by a long list of imperialist plotters that later came to include one of his erstwhile allies, the Soviet Union,\u201d The Washington Post reported upon <span>Tour\u00e9\u2019s <\/span>death. \u201cHis years in power, however, were marked by Guinea\u2019s economic paralysis and by bloody purges in reprisal for countless \u2018plots\u2019 against his rule.
