But numerous college-level textbooks, peer-reviewed journal articles, and authoritative sources affirm that an unborn child\u2019s heart begins to beat at approximately the sixth week of pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Allegation:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Chris Cuomo asked an abortionist to check the language used by the pro-life movement during the first hour of his September 2 show on CNN. \u201cThe idea of six weeks, heartbeat at six weeks, does that even exist in science? Is there a heart at six weeks?\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/transcripts.cnn.com\/show\/CPT\/date\/2021-09-02\/segment\/01\">asked<\/a> Texas abortionist <a href=\"https:\/\/abortiondocs.org\/abortionists\/allison-l-gilbert\/\">Allison Gilbert<\/a> of the Southwestern Women\u2019s Surgery Center in Dallas.<\/p>\n<p>Gilbert said, \u201cThere is most certainly not a fully-formed heart, at that gestational age; it\u2019s more of an electric clicker that you can see on the screen, which we refer to [as] cardiac activity, rather than a heartbeat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cuomo continued, \u201cThey call it the heartbeat bill, because the heartbeat pulls on your heartstrings, makes you think \u2018Person \u2014 that\u2019s what has a heartbeat.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the second hour of his show \u2014 which substituted for the first hour of \u201cDon Lemon Tonight\u201d \u2014 Cuomo <a href=\"https:\/\/transcripts.cnn.com\/show\/CPT\/date\/2021-09-02\/segment\/02\">asked<\/a> abortion activist Anna Rupani to characterize the reason Texas lawmakers use the term heartbeat.&nbsp;\u201cHeartbeat is a play, right?\u201d Cuomo asked. \u201cThey want to say heartbeat, because it makes it sound like it\u2019s a person at six weeks, right? That\u2019s why it has a heartbeat, as opposed to cardiac activity, which is a big difference, because there is no fully-formed organ there, because the thing is the size of a kidney bean!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chris Cuomo accused Texas lawmakers of doctoring language to further their political agenda. He previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/4-lies-the-media-is-telling-about-abortion-and-pro-life-americans\">asserted<\/a> that bills that protect unborn children from abortion are about \u201clegislating to the far-Right, white-fright vote.\u201d But Cuomo seemingly admitted political motivations drove his own word choice. \u201cI got to be honest, I don\u2019t like describing you as \u2018a doctor who does abortions,\u2019\u201d he said. Abortion is \u201csupposed to be just another procedure.\u201d He later added, \u201cYou do a lot of things. That is one thing that you do. \u2026 I just didn\u2019t want to limit you, and try to play to some <em>faux&nbsp;<\/em>controversy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Facts:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cuomo and his guest claimed that the human heart is not fully formed at six weeks\u2019 development, and only electronic pulses known as \u201ccardiac activity\u201d are present. While the leading authorities agree that the embryonic heart begins as a tube and eventually develops the four-chambered heart during gestational <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=four-chamber+heart+develop+week+&amp;client=safari&amp;rls=en&amp;ei=LqIyYfrzLqa7ggfRtLb4BQ&amp;oq=four-chamber+heart+develop+week+&amp;gs_lcp=Cgdnd3Mtd2l6EAMyCAghEBYQHRAeOgcIABBHELADOggIABAWEAoQHjoGCAAQFhAeOgUIABCGAzoFCCEQoAE6BQghEKsCSgQIQRgAUI0gWM5DYJpIaAFwAngAgAHBAYgBgBGSAQQwLjE0mAEAoAEByAEIwAEB&amp;sclient=gws-wiz&amp;ved=0ahUKEwj6wtjZ7ePyAhWmneAKHVGaDV8Q4dUDCA0&amp;uact=5\">week seven<\/a>, scientific authorities refer to the developing organ as a heart and the pulses as a \u201cheartbeat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Mayo Clinic notes that fetal \u201c[g]rowth is rapid\u201d in the sixth week of pregnancy, \u201c[j]ust four weeks after conception.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe heart and other organs also are starting to form and the heart begins to beat,\u201d the Mayo Clinic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/pregnancy-week-by-week\/in-depth\/prenatal-care\/art-20045302\">states<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>During week five, \u201cYour baby\u2019s heart and a primitive circulatory system will form in the middle layer of cells \u2014 the mesoderm. This layer of cells will also serve as the foundation for your baby\u2019s bones, ligaments, kidneys and much of the reproductive system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although the Mayo Clinic is an exceptional clinic, it is no exception when it comes to affirming the reality of a fetal heartbeat at six weeks\u2019 gestation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt about 6 weeks, your baby\u2019s heart beat [sic] can usually be detected,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/articles\/7247-fetal-development-stages-of-growth\">The Cleveland Clinic<\/a>. While the groundbreaking medical facility put \u201cheart\u201d inside quotation marks when discussing the organ\u2019s development at four weeks\u2019 gestation \u2014 noting, \u201cThe tiny \u2018heart\u2019 tube will beat 65 times a minute by the end of the fourth week\u201d \u2014 it did no such thing when writing of fetal heart development at six weeks, nor again at the beginning of month four, when it notes, \u201cYour baby\u2019s heartbeat may now be audible through an instrument called a doppler.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although not an authority on science, NPR <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/13.7\/2011\/09\/14\/140397576\/when-does-life-begin\">reported<\/a> (at your expense), \u201cUsually, heartbeat can be detected by vaginal ultrasound somewhere between 6 \u00bd \u2013 7 weeks. The heartbeat may have started around six weeks, although some sources place it even earlier, at around 3 \u2013 4 weeks after conception.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nor is this language confined merely to popular online websites designed for mass consumption. Medical textbooks and journals also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/human-embryo-heart-medical-sources\/\">state<\/a> that a fetal or embryonic heartbeat begins at approximately the 21<sup>st<\/sup> day of development:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cThe human heart is the first functional organ to develop. It begins beating and pumping blood around day 21 or 22, a mere three weeks after fertilization. \u2026 It originates about day 18 or 19 from the mesoderm and begins beating and pumping blood about day 21 or 22,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/open.oregonstate.education\/aandp\/chapter\/19-5-development-of-the-heart\/?fbclid=IwAR09bo7LnRFu2yGxsGFMYFCko-EQTPRBOED0JnY2svEMLXCYM-oxsYoyC0A\">according<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/open.oregonstate.education\/aandp\/\">Anatomy and Physiology<\/a> by Lindsay M. Biga, a textbook used at Oregon State University (chapter 19.5).<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThe heart begins to beat on day 21 or 22. \u2026 The embryonic heartbeat can be detected \u2026 during the fourth week, approximately 6 weeks after the last normal menstrual period,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/books\/edition\/Before_We_Are_Born_E_Book\/gWKGBwAAQBAJ?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;dq=fetal+heartbeat+begins&amp;pg=PA45&amp;printsec=frontcover\">according<\/a> to Before We Are Born: Essentials of Embryology and Birth Defects by Keith L. Moore, T. V. N. Persaud, and Mark G. Torchia (p. 45).<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThe human heart is one of the first organs to form and function during embryogenesis. By the end of gestational week 3\u2026 the fetal heart becomes vital for oxygen and nutrient distribution.
