He said the Biden-Harris administration\u2019s \u201cdeliberate reframing\u201d of the issue \u201creally, frankly, rubs me the wrong way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The administration has frequently pivoted by discussing its airlift of approximately 123,000 people, including a few thousand Americans, as the conflict sputtered to a close.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t just talk about how many you got out. We have to talk about how many you left behind,\u201d Rieckhoff responded.<\/p>\n<p>While he called the U.S. airlift \u201cnotable,\u201d he noted that \u201cthe situation was also so bad that we&nbsp;<em>had<\/em>&nbsp;to get out that many that quickly. And we and still don\u2019t know how many may have been left behind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A State Department official said the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2021\/09\/01\/afghanistan-sivs-left-behind-state-dept-508327\">majority<\/a>\u201d of Afghan Special Immigrant Visa applicants were left behind during the administration\u2019s hasty withdrawal, Politico reported on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Rieckhoff accused the administration and its defenders of \u201cspiking the ball,\u201d while ignoring \u201cthe humanitarian aspect\u201d of the ongoing chaos.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEspecially for women and girls, the next six months could be catastrophic,\u201d said Rieckhoff. \u201cHow will the American public feel if ISIS-K continues to grow there. How will they feel if ISIS-K continues to set up bases there? How will they feel if we see a humanitarian disaster played on our screen week, after week, after week, where the Taliban does what they do best?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rieckhoff said that Sullivan\u2019s missed the point when he praised private efforts by veterans to rescue those trapped in Afghanistan, putatively without the formal involvement of the U.S. government. \u201cWe\u2019re rallying, because our government failed,\u201d said Rieckhoff. \u201cAnd where is the accountability? That is the question for Jake Sullivan, and that is a question for the president that he continues to refuse to answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both Rieckhoff and his fellow panelist, New York Times Pentagon correspondent Helene Cooper, called out President Joe Biden for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/episode\/friday-august-20-2021\">conflating<\/a> his politically popular decision to end the U.S. military presence in Afghanistan with the subpar execution of the evacuation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe withdrawal is different from the evacuation. And the evacuation was marred with incompetence, and failure, and disorganization, and lies,\u201d Rieckhoff told Wallace.<\/p>\n<p>Cooper agreed that the Biden administration \u201ccan\u2019t conflate criticism over the decision to withdraw, which is one thing, with criticism over how we carried out that withdrawal \u2014 and that sounded to me like what our national security adviser just did\u201d and \u201cto a certain extent, what President Biden sometimes does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe American bureaucracy fell down\u201d during the last waning days of the conflict, Cooper said. \u201cThe entire national security apparatus, that is run by the national security adviser, Jake Sullivan,\u201d failed.
