The drug, however, caused severe birth defects in more than 10,000 children worldwide, the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dana-farber.org\/newsroom\/news-releases\/2018\/after-60-years--scientists-uncover-how-thalidomide-produced-birth-defects\/#:~:text=Marketed%20and%20sold%20extensively%20in,than%2010%2C000%20children%20and%20an\">website<\/a> states.<\/p>\n<p>One post shared on Facebook claims the FDA approved the drug in the 1960s. It features a black-and-white image of two children, seemingly affected by thalidomide, sitting in a sandbox together. \u201cJust a friendly reminder that the FDA approved thalidomide for use in the 60\u2019s,\u201d reads the image\u2019s caption. \u201cThey\u2019ve also approved over 20,000 drugs for consumption today! The FDA is rocking it!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The post may be in response to the recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/fda-approves-first-covid-19-vaccine\">FDA<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/business-health-coronavirus-pandemic-coronavirus-vaccine-061cccd14adcb85e5eab91ebc8b3a234\">approval<\/a> of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for people aged 16 and older. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2020\/03\/26\/fact-check-man-died-chloroquin-fish-tank-coronavirus\/\">(RELATED: Did A Man Die \u2018After Taking Malaria Medication Touted By Trump As Possible Cure For Coronavirus\u2019?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The FDA did not, however, approve thalidomide in the 1960s, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/03\/23\/health\/thalidomide-fda-documents.html?fbclid=IwAR0tfgHv_RPJSxQzb1KLDzKZeC4hQivOsZJd8O2doYne_GOppjavvrD1OBk\">The New York Times<\/a> reported. Rather, FDA pharmacologist Frances Oldham Kelsey was instrumental in preventing the drug\u2019s widespread use in the U.S., according to UChicago Medicine\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchicagomedicine.org\/forefront\/biological-sciences-articles\/courageous-physician-scientist-saved-the-us-from-a-birth-defects-catastrophe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Kelsey\u2019s biography on the National Library of Medicine\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/cfmedicine.nlm.nih.gov\/physicians\/biography_182.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">website<\/a> describes how she was working as a pharmacologist for the FDA in 1960 when an application for the drug reached her for review. Kelsey determined the application lacked sufficient evidence of safety and rejected it, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/science-nature\/woman-who-stood-between-america-and-epidemic-birth-defects-180963165\/\">Smithsonian Magazine<\/a>.&nbsp;By the early 1960s, evidence of the dangerous effects the drug had on children was mounting and it was withdrawn by its manufacturers in Europe, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-38386021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BBC News<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>Kelsey was awarded the President\u2019s Award for Distinguished Federal Civilian Service by President John F. Kennedy in 1962 for her efforts to prevent the dangerous drug from reaching the U.S. market, the FDA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/about-fda\/fda-history-exhibits\/frances-oldham-kelsey-medical-reviewer-famous-averting-public-health-tragedy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">website<\/a> states. The effects of thalidomide prompted Congress to pass the 1962 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4101807\/\">Kefauver-Harris Amendments<\/a> which further tightened regulations around pharmaceutical drugs, according to a journal published in the National Library of Medicine.<\/p>\n<p>Thalidomide was eventually approved by the FDA in 1998 as a treatment for leprosy, and later as a treatment for multiple myeloma, an article published in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/B9780123864543007910\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Encyclopedia of Toxicology<\/a> reports.
