The number of Democrats who put their faith in media reporting has remained nearly unchanged since 2016, declining only five points, from 83% to 78%.<\/p>\n<p>But Republicans who said they could place stock in at least some of the legacy media\u2019s dispatches halved, falling from 70% in 2016 to 35% in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>While that\u2019s an enormous drop, much of it has come in just the last 18 months. The share of GOP members who say that the legacy media reports the truth has fallen by 14 percentage points since late 2019. The year 2020 brought an onslaught of news about the novel coronavirus global pandemic \u2014 including blanket assurances that COVID-19 could not have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/from-impossible-to-credible-how-the-legacy-media-is-desperately-spinning-their-wuhan-lab-flip-flop\">originated<\/a> in the Wuhan Institute of Virology \u2014 as well as overly negative coverage of former President Donald Trump and reports of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/watch-cnn-claims-kenosha-protests-are-fiery-but-mostly-peaceful-as-city-burns-behind-reporter\">fiery but mostly peaceful protests<\/a>\u201d by the Black Lives Matter movement.<\/p>\n<p>The mainstream media\u2019s suppression of eight stories alone may have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/study-medias-suppression-of-8-issues-likely-swung-election-to-biden\">swung the 2020 presidential election<\/a> from President Trump to Joe Biden, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbusters.org\/blogs\/nb\/rich-noyes\/2020\/11\/24\/special-report-stealing-presidency-2020\">study<\/a> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/mrc.org\/\">Media Research Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Registered Democrats have greater trust in the national news media than Republicans by 45 percentage points, but their fidelity to the Fourth Estate holds extends to local and social media news outlets. While two-thirds of Republicans trust local media, 84% of Democrats do so.<\/p>\n<p>Despite frequently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2021\/07\/19\/biden-facebook-misinformation\/\">condemning<\/a> \u201cmisinformation on Facebook,\u201d Democrats are also more likely to trust social media as a source of <em>bona fide<\/em> information. \u201cAbout a third of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents (34%) and 19% of Republicans and Republican leaners say they have at least some trust in the information that comes from social media \u2013 a 15-point gap,\u201d wrote Pew Research Center senior researcher Jeffrey Gottfried. \u201cThis gap is larger than gaps from any other time in recent years and has nearly doubled since late 2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Conservatives\u2019 trust in social media platforms like Twitter has eroded since the 2020 election, when those outlets prevented users from sharing a New York Post story about the contents of Hunter Biden\u2019s laptop; permanently banned former President Donald Trump for inciting violence while allowing an apparent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/cnn-reporter-notes-big-holes-in-twitter-policy-for-banning-trump-but-not-the-taliban\">spokesman for the Taliban<\/a> to maintain his account; and coordinated to put their competitor, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/social-media-platform-parler-goes-dark-as-amazon-suspends-service\">Parler, out of business<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats are far more likely than Republicans to trust \u201cmainstream\u201d media sources. While just over half (53%) of Republican Party members say they trust major media outlets, 78% of Democrats trusted the often corporate-dominated media, according to another Pew Research poll released in July. Only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/only-6-of-republicans-trust-tv-news-new-poll\">6% of Republicans<\/a> trust TV news.<\/p>\n<p>While Democrats seemingly put greater confidence in what they read or hear from large media outlets, yet another recent Pew Research poll found \u2014 somewhat counterintuitively \u2014 they also believe that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/survey-65-of-democrats-say-govt-should-ban-misinformation-even-if-it-suppresses-truth\">politicians should ban<\/a>\u201cmisinformation,\u201d even at the cost of suppressing truth.
