Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wrote after the agreement passed. \u201cWe\u2019ll only vote for the infrastructure bill when the House passes a reconciliation package that delivers on overdue promises.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Republicans have also vowed to oppose a debt ceiling increase. \u201cBecause Democrats are responsible for the spending, they need to take responsibility for increasing the debt ceiling,\u201d over 100 of them wrote.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Lawmakers have spent most of August on vacation from Washington after marathon sessions that advanced a bipartisan infrastructure bill and Democrats\u2019 $3.5 trillion budget, but those pain-staking efforts are nothing compared to what lies in store for Congress come September.<\/p>\n<p>Congress will have just days to agree on a plan to fund the government and raise the debt ceiling before consequential deadlines, all while Democrats aim to pass both the budget and public works package over opposition from Republicans and certain intraparty squabbles.<\/p>\n<p>The rush is compounded by the fact the Senate does not return to Washington until Sept. 13, while the House does not convene until Sept. 20.<\/p>\n<p>The Senate <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/08\/10\/senate-passes-infrastructure-package-dozen-republicans-join-dems-kyrsten-sinema-rob-portman-joe-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">passed the infrastructure bill<\/a> on Aug. 10, but the bill must still pass the House before heading to President Joe Biden\u2019s desk. The lower chamber, after days of <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/08\/24\/house-moderates-nancy-pelosi-standoff-talks-stall-budget-infrastructure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">contentious deliberations<\/a> between moderates and Democratic leadership, adopted a rule <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/08\/24\/democrats-house-of-representatives-joe-biden-budget-infrastructure-stalemate-nancy-pelosi-moderates-congress\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mandating a vote on the bill<\/a> by Sept. 27, but disagreements within the caucus over how the budget will be prioritized remain front and center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur position remains unchanged,\u201d Rep. (Kevin Dietsch\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The House\u2019s rule did also advance Democrats\u2019 budget and allow for the creation of an accompanying reconciliation bill \u2014 the legislation that outlines and funds their priorities that is exempt from a Senate filibuster. Democrats are not only aiming to craft what will be a massive bill by Sept. 15, but have almost no room for error when it comes to passing it given their three-vote margin in the House and 50-50 split in the Senate.<\/p>\n<p>And while progressives have called the $3.5 trillion figure a \u201ccompromise\u201d and the Senate <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/08\/11\/senate-adopts-democrats-budget-3-5-trillion-congress-bernie-sanders\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">agreed to begin the reconciliation process<\/a> earlier this month, moderates like West Virginia Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Sen_JoeManchin\/status\/1429814485846532099\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joe Manchin<\/a> and Arizona Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/08\/23\/kyrsten-sinema-doubles-down-against-democrats-3-5-trillion-budget\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kyrsten Sinema<\/a> have flatly objected to a budget of that size.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProceedings in the U.S. House will have no impact on Kyrsten\u2019s views about what is best for our country,\u201d her spokesman said earlier in August. \u201cIncluding the fact that she will not support a budget reconciliation bill that costs $3.5 trillion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If the budget is not ready by Sept. 27, it is entirely possible that progressives balk at the infrastructure bill. \u201cWe will only vote for the infrastructure bill after passing the reconciliation bill,\u201d Washington Rep. Pramila Jayapal, the chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/USProgressives\/status\/1430265877757415434\/photo\/1\">wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On top of what will likely be an all-out push to pass the bills \u2013 which include the bulk of Biden\u2019s domestic agenda \u2013 Congress must also vote on raising the debt ceiling, which was last done just over two years ago. If they take no action whatsoever, the Treasury could run out of money to fund the government, which could spark a crisis that lowers America\u2019s credit rating.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike in previous years, Republicans have said they <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/08\/09\/shared-responsibility-janet-yellen-raise-debt-ceiling-treasury-secretary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">will not vote for a debt ceiling increase<\/a>, effectively daring Democrats to include it in the reconciliation bill and raise it on their own. Over 100 on Monday signed a letter vowing to oppose it, citing Democrats\u2019 $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief bill and the budget.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn order for this spending to occur, our nation\u2019s debt limit will have to be increased significantly,\u201d they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/house-republicans-vote-debt-ceiling-limit-letter-democrats-biden-reconciliation\">wrote<\/a>. \u201cBecause Democrats are responsible for the spending, they need to take responsibility for increasing the debt ceiling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Congress finally must also fund the government for 2022 before the current funding runs dry on Sept. 30. While the annual process has recently consisted of bitter partisan brawls that result in last-minute compromises, Congress could pass a <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/12\/18\/congress-passes-stopgap-bill-avert-government-shutdown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">continuing resolution<\/a> that would likely the government through 2021 and punt the extended funding bill to the holidays.<\/p>\n<p>If they fail to do so, then the government will shut down for the third time in less than four years.<\/p>\n<p>Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience.
