On Sunday, Kirby himself admitted that there were \u201croughly\u201d 300 Americans still behind enemy lines awaiting a trip out of Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, Gen. Kenneth McKenzie, the head of United States Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that there were Americans who wanted to leave Afghanistan still on the ground in or near Kabul, and they numbered in the \u201cvery low hundreds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe did not get out everybody we had wanted to get out,\u201d McKenzie admitted Monday, adding that diplomatic measures will likely be needed to extract Americans left behind.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing the situation Tuesday, Kirby seemed to admit, again, that Americans had, indeed, been left behind, but downplayed the danger they now face living under Taliban authority.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not completely unlike the way we do it elsewhere around the world,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RNCResearch\/status\/1432687187548647437\">Kirby said when asked how the Biden Administration<\/a> plans to extract its own citizens from Afghanistan. \u201cWe have Americans that get stranded in countries all the time, and we do everything we can to try to facilitate safe passage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s likely true, but those Americans do not necessarily get stranded in hostile countries, and typically not in large numbers.<\/p>\n<p>Kirby did seem to contract White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki\u2019s statement from several weeks ago, indicating that no Americans were \u201cstranded\u201d in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes the President have a sense that most of the criticism is not of leaving Afghanistan, it\u2019s the way that he has ordered it to happen \u2014 by pulling the troops before getting these Americans who are now stranded?\u201d Fox News\u2019 Peter Doocy asked Psaki at a press conference following the Taliban\u2019s takeover of Kabul. \u201cDoes he have a sense of that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirst of all, I think it\u2019s irresponsible to say Americans are stranded. They are not,\u201d Psaki shot back. \u201cWe are committed to bringing Americans, who want to come home, home. We are in touch with them via phone, via text, via e-mail, via any way that we can possibly reach Americans to get them home if they want to return home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kirby also contradicted the Biden administration\u2019s position from previous weeks \u2014 that Americans who were left behind in Afghanistan made a choice to avoid extraction. In this case, the Pentagon and CENTCOM have both admitted that Americans who wanted to leave the country did not get evacuated on time. Kirby, in the same interview, echoed CENTCOM in saying the number of Americans who want to leave but cannot is in the \u201clow hundreds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>President Joe Biden is expected to speak on the matter of rescuing Americans left behind following withdrawal Tuesday afternoon, and explain the administration\u2019s decision to trust the Taliban to assist in those rescues rather than extend the timeline for departure.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
