Baez, along with Kevin Pillar and Francisco Lindor, put their \u201cthumbs-down\u201d in a message to the Mets\u2019 faithful.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cJust the boos that we get,\u201d Baez <a href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/mets-javier-baez-explains-thumbs-215457298.html\">said<\/a> about the meaning behind the thumbs-down gesture. \u201cWe\u2019re not machines, we\u2019re going to struggle. We\u2019re going to struggle seven times out of ten. It just feels bad when I strike out and I get booed, it doesn\u2019t really get to me, but I want to let them know that we\u2019re going to do the same thing to let them know how it feels.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIf we win together, then we\u2019re going to lose together and the fans are a really big part of it. In my case, they gotta be better. I play for the fans and I love the fans, but if they\u2019re going to do that, they\u2019re just putting more pressure on the team and that\u2019s not what we want.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Baez is hitting .210 with 22 strikeouts to just 13 hits in his short time with the Mets.<\/p>\n<p><span>Not surprisingly, team president Sandy Alderson had strong words for those players who participated in the new gesture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThese comments, and any gestures by [Baez] or other players with similar intent, are totally unacceptable and will not be tolerated,\u201d Alderson <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/08\/29\/frustrated-mets-javier-baez-give-their-fans-a-thumbs-down\/\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span>, adding that he will be meeting with players and staff to convey the message directly. \u201cMets fans are understandably frustrated over the team\u2019s recent performance. The players and the organization are equally frustrated, but fans at Citi Field have every right to express their own disappointment. Booing is every fan\u2019s right.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Mets manager Luis Rojas said that Baez is going to have to adjust to the boos, as the fanbase is not one for holding back.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI haven\u2019t had many conversations with Javy about that, everything\u2019s been about the game,\u201d Rojas said. \u201cGetting to know Javy more and more every day, he\u2019s an outstanding kid to be around. Javy being a new guy here, getting to know our fanbase. Some of the reaction that our fanbase has, you see it\u2019s something he\u2019s learning. Our fans are like that, our fans are very passionate. They\u2019re going to demand the best out of everyone here \u2014 players, managers. We understand where it\u2019s coming from, it\u2019s always been like that. They demand the best, they demand wins. We just gotta keep working to deliver it to them and be our best.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI think it\u2019s something he\u2019s probably getting used to, it\u2019s the first time he\u2019s had another uniform. He\u2019s seen some of these things in his time here, probably that\u2019s why he\u2019s sharing, he\u2019s venting. It\u2019s a learning experience. There\u2019s different guys that have probably felt that way coming into here and not performing immediately. They learn how to deal with it and they know where the fanbase is coming from.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This isn\u2019t the friendly confines of Wrigley Field. New York sports fans will let you know when you\u2019re letting them down. Yankees fans once booed Derek Jeter when he was in the middle of a terrible slump at the plate. Do you know how Jeter responded? By <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/08\/29\/mets-javier-baezs-foolish-war-with-fans-is-colossal-mistake\/\">saying<\/a>, \u201cI would boo myself too.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>If Jeter can let the boos slide off his back, Baez certainly can as he barely stays above the Mendoza Line in his 17 games in New York.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Mets are going nowhere and their fans don\u2019t appreciate it. They have the third-highest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotrac.com\/mlb\/payroll\/\">payroll<\/a> in MLB \u2014 $198,063,083 \u2014 and they sit 7.5 games behind the Atlanta Braves in the NL East, seven back in the Wild Card. The Mets offense is 26th out of 30 teams in home runs, 24th in batting average, and 29th in runs scored.
