Ted Cruz (R-TX) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/watch-bidens-nominee-to-lead-atf-admits-to-ted-cruz-that-he-supports-a-ban-on-ar-15s\"><span>asked<\/span><\/a><span> Chipman.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWith respect to the AR-15, I support a ban as has been presented in a Senate bill, and supported by the president,\u201d Chipman responded plainly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2016\/06\/13\/owned-by-5-million-americans-ar-15-under-renewed-fire-after-orlando-massacre.html\"><span>estimate<\/span><\/a><span>, Americans own 5 million AR-15s, rendering it one of the most popular firearms in the nation. Banning the weapon would therefore be easier said than done.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In the low likelihood that President Biden successfully bans the AR-15, he would be following in the footsteps of history\u2019s worst tyrants. Indeed, the last century is replete with examples of tyrannical leaders relying upon gun regulations to subjugate and oppress their own people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Here are four regimes that used gun confiscation before going tyrannical.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Nazi Germany<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>The most infamous dictator of the twentieth century began his reign of terror by taking guns from German Jews.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As Independent Institute senior fellow Stephen Halbrook <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/2013\/12\/how-nazis-used-gun-control-stephen-p-halbrook\/\"><span>explains<\/span><\/a><span> in National Review, Weimar Republic officials discovered that Nazi militants planned to seize power in 1931 and execute Jews who refused to surrender their firearms. After this revelation, the Weimar government \u201cauthorized the registration of all firearms\u201d with the stipulation that the records \u201cmust not fall into the hands of any extremist group.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Indeed, once he seized power two years later, Adolf Hitler \u201cused the records to identify, disarm, and attack political opponents and Jews.\u201d Police nullified the gun licenses of those who were not \u201cpolitically reliable.\u201d In 1938, Hitler signed legislation that prohibited Jews from \u201cworking in the firearms industry.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>German Jews were then required to \u201csurrender all their weapons\u201d \u2014 a process that was enforced by the gun records obtained by police. Kristallnacht occurred weeks later.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cSS chief Heinrich Himmler.\u201d explained Halbrook, \u201cdecreed that 20 years be served in a concentration camp by any Jew possessing a firearm. Rusty revolvers and bayonets from the Great War were confiscated from Jewish veterans who had served with distinction. Twenty thousand Jewish men were thrown into concentration camps, and had to pay ransoms to get released.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Soviet Russia<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>The first communist revolutionaries began seizing firearms within a year of gaining power in Russia \u2014 even though such a development contradicted the original intentions of Vladimir Lenin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWhat kind of militia do we need, the proletariat, all the toiling people?\u201d wrote Lenin in his \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marxists.org\/archive\/lenin\/works\/1917\/lfafar\/third.htm#v23pp64h-320\"><span>Letters from Afar<\/span><\/a><span>.\u201d \u201cA genuine people\u2019s militia, i.e., one that, first, consists of the entire population, of all adult citizens of both sexes; and, second, one that combines the functions of a people\u2019s army with police functions, with the functions of the chief and fundamental organ of public order and public administration.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Nevertheless, as the Mises Institute in Austria <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mises.org\/wire\/brief-history-repressive-regimes-and-their-gun-laws\"><span>explains<\/span><\/a><span>, the Council of People\u2019s Commissar mandated in 1918 that Soviet citizens surrender their firearms or face imprisonment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Later, Soviet satellite states \u2014 such as Bulgaria, East Germany, and Hungary \u2014 enacted similar gun regulations that rendered gun ownership nearly impossible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Cambodia<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>The genocidal Khmer Rouge regime embarked on a gun regulation program of their own.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.smallarmssurvey.org\/fileadmin\/docs\/F-Working-papers\/SAS-WP4-Cambodia.pdf\"><span>paper<\/span><\/a><span> from the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Switzerland explains, private gun ownership was mainly a reality for elites in Cambodia before the Khmer Rouge rose to power. Under the regime, gun ownership became far less common \u2014 for most people living in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cPrivate weapons ownership remained strictly regulated,\u201d reads the paper. \u201cYet children of well-connected government officials of ethnic Khmer origin mention their father\u2019s private gun in their memoirs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>One Cambodian \u201crecalls that her father, a government employee overseeing import and export\u2026 had been provided with pistols for his work\u201d \u2014 a \u201cprivilege associated with the status of his position.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>By and large, \u201cthe relatively high cost of foreign-made firearms in relation to Cambodia\u2019s purchasing power on the global market\u201d ensured that private firearms acquisition was beyond the means of most Cambodians. Only those with \u201caccess to government\u201d could acquire weapons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe Khmer Rouge regime eliminated the previous elite, and in the process effectively ended private gun ownership,\u201d adds the study.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Cuba<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Like other Marxists, the Castros sought to confiscate guns from the Cuban people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3513846\/\"><span>paper<\/span><\/a><span> about gun violence in the United States, Cuban-born medical ethicist Miguel Faria recalled the famous 1959 words of Fidel Castro that inaugurated a program of rampant gun confiscation: \u201cGuns, for what? To fight against whom? Against the Revolutionary government that has the support of the people?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Fidel Castro began confiscating weapons after the Revolutionary Directorate \u2014 a militia group \u2014 threatening to topple the new government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cFidel Castro defused the situation and neutralized the defiance of the RD,\u201d recounted Faria. \u201cShortly thereafter, Castro commenced his long-term campaign to disarm not only his confreres [colleagues] in the Revolutionary Directorate who had not joined him, but also, in due time, all Cubans.
