The guide includes multiple sections, grouping terms under banners like \u201cDisability\u201d and \u201cHomelessness\u201d before saying those very words aren\u2019t inclusive enough.<\/p>\n<p>For example, under the disability heading, the guide says that words like \u201cdisabled,\u201d \u201cdifferently abled\u201d and \u201chandicapped\u201d are stigmatizing and should be replaced with lengthy phrases like \u201cpeople with disabilities\/a disability\u201d or \u201cpeople who use a wheelchair or mobility device.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCDC is aware that some individuals with disabilities prefer to use identity-first terminology, which means a disability or disability status is referred to first; for the purposes of these guidelines, CDC promotes person-first language,\u201d the guide says.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the guide is similar, suggesting the shorter identifier is wrong but simply adding \u201cpeople with\u201d ahead of that to apparently make it more inclusive.<\/p>\n<p>The guide\u2019s headlines are in alphabetical order, so the first section is titled \u201cCorrections &amp; Detentions\u201d and suggests words like \u201cinmate,\u201d \u201cprisoner,\u201d \u201cconvict\/ex-convict,\u201d \u201coffender,\u201d \u201ccriminal,\u201d \u201cparolee\u201d and \u201cdetainee\u201d are all stigmatizing. Instead, the CDC suggests using the following terms:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>People\/persons who are incarcerated or detained (often used for shorter jail stays or youth in detention facilities)<\/li>\n<li>Partner\/child of an incarcerated person<\/li>\n<li>Persons in pre-trial or with charge<\/li>\n<li>People who were formerly incarcerated<\/li>\n<li>Persons on parole or probation<\/li>\n<li>Non-US citizens (or immigrants) in immigration detention facilities<\/li>\n<li>People in immigration detention facilities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The guide continues in this way. Under the section titled \u201cDrug\/Substance Use,\u201d the CDC suggests not calling people \u201calcoholics,\u201d \u201csmokers,\u201d or \u201cdrug-users,\u201d but instead using phrases like \u201cpersons with substance use disorder\u201d or \u201cpeople who smoke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for \u201celderly,\u201d the CDC recommends calling people \u201colder adults or elders\u201d or referring to people by age ranges.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of saying \u201cunderserved people,\u201d the guide suggests saying \u201cpeople who are underserved by [specific service\/resource].\u201d It also suggests saying \u201cPeople who are uninsured\/people who are underinsured\/people who do not have health insurance\u201d instead of simply saying \u201cuninsured.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnderserved relates to limited access to services that are accessible, acceptable, and affordable, including healthcare. Do not use underserved when you really mean disproportionately affected,\u201d the CDC says.<\/p>\n<p>The guide includes predictable substitutions for gender- and race-related terms, though even there, the guide is odd. It includes words like \u201cAfro-American\u201d and \u201cnegro\u201d even though those aren\u2019t commonly used. It also suggests <em>not<\/em> referring to members of a particular race or ethnicity as a \u201ccommunity,\u201d as in, \u201cthe black community.\u201d The CDC recommends adding \u201cpersons\u201d after any racial or ethnic identifier, such as \u201cAsian persons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Under the \u201cSexual Orientation &amp; Gender Identity\u201d heading, the CDC suggests \u201chomosexual\u201d is wrong but \u201cqueer\u201d is acceptable. The supposedly science-based federal agency also says \u201cbiologically male\/female\u201d and \u201cgenetically male\/female\u201d are the wrong terms and should be replaced with \u201cAssigned male\/female at birth\u201d or \u201cDesignated male\/female at birth,\u201d as if doctors are just picking these things out of a hat.<\/p>\n<p>Gendered language is also out at the CDC, but you can call people \u201cTwo-spirit.\u201d Also, gendered pronouns appear in both the bad list and the good list, so good luck figuring that one out. The CDC suggests using terms \u201cthat are inclusive of all gender identities.\u201d So, instead of saying mom- or dad-to be, simply say \u201cparents-to-be.\u201d This seems to follow CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky using the term \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/cdc-director-refers-to-pregnant-people-social-media-blasts-her\">pregnant people<\/a>\u201d instead of \u201cpregnant women.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps one of the oddest words to be deemed non-inclusive by the CDC is \u201cstakeholder,\u201d which the agency defines as \u201cpersons or groups who have an interest or concern in a project, activity, or course of action.\u201d The CDC suggests replacing this word \u201cas much as possible\u201d and replacing it with words like \u201cinformers, advisors, consultants, collaborators, co-owners.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s really strange is that the CDC seems to want to replace descriptive words in order to include the word \u201cpersons,\u201d as if people can\u2019t understand that a smoker is a person without using the phrase \u201cperson who smokes.\u201d But as can be seen in many sections of the CDC guide, such humanization only goes so far. If \u201cuninsured\u201d is dehumanizing but \u201cpeople who are uninsured\u201d is not, then isn\u2019t \u201cconsultant\u201d also dehumanizing? Shouldn\u2019t it be \u201cpeople who consult?\u201d Wouldn\u2019t this theory extend to doctors, journalists, and lawyers?
