The lecturer pointed to the heightened anti-Muslim sentiment that allegedly ticks up around the anniversary of the 9\/11 attacks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cSchool and classroom 9\/11 commemorations are sites for increased anti-Muslim racism,\u201d the presentation reads.&nbsp; \u201cThis year\u2019s 20th anniversary commemorations will likely result in heightened risks of racist discourse, threats, and violence targeting Muslim students in schools and society. Educators are well-positioned to disrupt these risks by centering the socio-emotional needs of Muslims in their commemoration plans.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>DeCuir created a list of teaching standards that are \u201cin\u201d and \u201cout,\u201d according to her viewpoints. Teaching standards that are \u201cin\u201d include \u201cacknowledgment of anti-Muslim racism.\u201d Teaching standards that are \u201cout\u201d include the \u201cfalse assumption of Muslim responsibility for 9\/11\u201d and \u201cAmerican exceptionalism.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The presentation also listed examples of \u201charmful teaching\u201d on 9\/11. Examples included \u201ccreating a tense classroom environment,\u201d \u201creducing 9\/11 instruction to death counts and fear mongering,\u201d \u201cassumptions of emotional distance,\u201d \u201cteaching about Islam and\/or Muslims,\u201d \u201camplifying the extremists and extremist acts of 9\/11,\u201d \u201cdemanding the condemnation of 9\/11,\u201d \u201cfailing to respond to anti-Muslim racism,\u201d and \u201creproducing a single, American narrative that marginalizes other students.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to her biography from American University, DeCuir is an education scholar who \u201cfocuses on the intersections of leadership, gender, and diverse cultural contexts to advance social justice.\u201d In a tweet about the event, she called on \u201cantiracist\u201d educators to join and \u201cdisrupt\u201d the current education of 9\/11.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>She has previously thanked the Michigan-based Institute for Social Policy and Understanding (ISPU), a Muslim interest group that was endorsed by Michigan\u2019s progressive Rep. Rashida Tlaib, for supporting her work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cMy work would not be possible without the amazing research from [ISPU]! Thank you for your support,\u201d DeCuir once tweeted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Tlaib endorsed the organization for its \u201cprofound\u201d work as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cISPU\u2019s work is very profound. There\u2019s so much truth in what they do \u2014&nbsp;even making our community put a mirror up and saying this is what\u2019s going on. I think that\u2019s critically important,\u201d Tlaib said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Virginia State Senator Steve Newman condemned the presentation and called on educators state-wide to teach \u201cthe facts.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI lived through 9\/11\u2026 This one event was due to Muslim extremists and their actions, the desire of these individuals to kill as many Americans as possible at one time. Why do we need to change history, again? Just tell the facts,\u201d Newman said. \u201cWe have a responsibility to our children today to ensure they know the awful truth about the events of that day, and the evil intent behind the terrorists \u2026 We must teach the next generation the truth about our history.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The comments made by the Virginia Department of Education mirror the comments of Minnesota\u2019s Democratic Rep.
