Kennedy\u2019s assassin, Sirhan Sirhan, on his 16<sup>th<\/sup> attempt.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2021-08-27\/robert-f-kennedys-killer-faces-a-parole-board-today-the-l-a-d-a-will-not-oppose-his-release\">According<\/a> to The Los Angeles Times, \u201cThe move sparks a 90-day review period by parole staff.\u201d The outlet reported, \u201cAfter that, Gov. Gavin Newsom \u2013 or whoever might replace him in next month\u2019s recall election \u2013 could still decide to block Sirhan\u2019s release.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sirhan <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/crime-shootings-california-los-angeles-san-diego-acfc333ba40e6853c6e2874281685d0b\">reportedly<\/a> smiled and gave two thumbs up after the decision was announced.<\/p>\n<p>Sirhan, 77, has been incarcerated for 53 years. Kennedy was vying for the Democratic presidential nomination when he was shot and killed by Sirhan at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles on June 5, 1968. Kennedy died the next day. The following year, Sirhan admitted to committing the murder. Five others were wounded during the incident.<\/p>\n<p>Kennedy was a 42-year-old U.S. senator from New York, and brother to former President John F. Kennedy, who had been assassinated in 1963.<\/p>\n<p>Sirhan was a 24-year-old Palestinian immigrant at the time of the killing. He <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/crime-shootings-california-los-angeles-san-diego-acfc333ba40e6853c6e2874281685d0b\">said<\/a> he was displeased with Kennedy\u2019s support of Israel, but did not remember committing the crime. After being convicted of first-degree murder in 1969, Sirhan was sentenced to death. However, the punishment was later commuted to life in prison with the possibility for parole in 1972.<\/p>\n<p>Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gasc\u00f3n\u2019s office did not oppose Sirhan\u2019s release, standing by a new policy prohibiting prosecutors from attending parole hearings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe role of a prosecutor and their access to information ends at sentencing,\u201d a spokesman for Gasc\u00f3n said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2021-08-27\/robert-f-kennedys-killer-faces-a-parole-board-today-the-l-a-d-a-will-not-oppose-his-release\">statement<\/a>. \u201cThe parole board\u2019s sole purpose is to objectively determine whether someone is suitable for release. If someone is the same person that committed an atrocious crime, that person will correctly not be found suitable for release.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still, two of Kennedy\u2019s sons said they supported parole for Sirhan.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"13.272471910112\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">NEW: The California Parole Board has granted parole suitability to Robert F. George Gascon didn\u2019t allow his prosecutors to oppose, &amp; Kennedy\u2019s sons approved of release. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Li7ppUvwsL\">pic.twitter.com\/Li7ppUvwsL<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Bill Melugin (@BillFOXLA) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BillFOXLA\/status\/1431370118420959240?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 27, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/crime-shootings-california-los-angeles-san-diego-acfc333ba40e6853c6e2874281685d0b\">According<\/a> to the Associated Press, Douglas Kennedy, who was a toddler when his father was killed, \u201ctold a two-person board panel that he was moved to tears by Sirhan\u2019s remorse and that the 77-year-old should be released if he\u2019s not a threat to others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m overwhelmed just be being able to view Mr. Sirhan face to face,\u201d he reportedly said. \u201cI\u2019ve lived my life both in fear of him and his name in one way or another. And I\u2019m grateful today to see him as a human being worthy of compassion and love.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who was 14 when his father died, submitted a letter to the parole board advocating for Sirhan\u2019s release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile nobody can speak definitively on behalf of my father, I firmly believe that based on his own consuming commitment to fairness and justice, that he would strongly encourage this board to release Mr. Sirhan because of Sirhan\u2019s impressive record of rehabilitation,\u201d the letter said.<\/p>\n<p>In 2018, Kennedy Jr. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/local\/lanow\/la-me-ln-kennedy-conspiracy-20180527-story.html\">said<\/a> he visited Sirhan in prison and believed a second gunman could have killed his father.<\/p>\n<p>More details from the AP:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"23\">\n<p><em>The Los Angeles Police Department, relatives of some of the victims and members of the public submitted letters opposing Sirhan\u2019s release, Parole Board Commissioner Robert Barton said at the start of Friday\u2019s proceeding, held virtually with Sirhan appearing on camera from a San Diego County prison.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe don\u2019t have a DA here, but I have to consider all sides,\u201d Barton said, noting it would consider arguments made in the past by prosecutors opposing his release, depending on their relevance.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Sirhan\u2019s lawyer, Angela Berry, said the board should base its decision on who Sirhan is today and not what he did more than 50 years ago. She said he is not a threat to the public.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI would never put myself in jeopardy again,\u201d Sirhan told the panel on Friday. \u201cYou have my pledge.
