Beijing&#8217;s military officials have conducted a massive buildup of missile, warship, air, space, and cyber capabilities they plan to use in an invasion of Taiwan. Chinese president Xi Jinping <a href=\"https:\/\/asia.nikkei.com\/Editor-s-Picks\/China-up-close\/Taiwan-s-Tsai-shoots-down-Xi-s-unification-road-map\">says<\/a> he aims to seize Taiwan by 2049.<\/p>\n<p>An invasion may come much sooner. Chinese military brass have this month&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/national-security\/china-launches-massive-war-exercises-near-taiwan\/\">dispatched<\/a> large groups of soldiers to the South China Sea for war drills intended to threaten Taiwan. Incursions into Taiwanese airspace have <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1qbfYF0VgDBJoFZN5elpZwNTiKZ4nvCUcs5a7oYwm52g\/edit#gid=2015900050\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">peaked<\/a>&nbsp;this year. Former U.S. Indo-Pacific commander Philip S. Davidson&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/news.usni.org\/2021\/03\/09\/davidson-china-could-try-to-take-control-of-taiwan-in-next-six-years\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> lawmakers in March that China will likely launch an invasion within the next six years.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. military, however, may be unable to successfully defend Taiwan. Simulations run by the Pentagon in July <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defenseone.com\/policy\/2021\/07\/it-failed-miserably-after-wargaming-loss-joint-chiefs-are-overhauling-how-us-military-will-fight\/184050\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">showed<\/a>&nbsp;that American attempts to shield Taiwan from Chinese attacks would fail &#8220;miserably.&#8221; And the Biden administration has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/national-security\/biden-defense-budget-gives-china-upper-hand-republican-hawks-say\/\">cut<\/a>&nbsp;funds that would have gone to warships, missiles, and other weapons, which experts say could prove crucial in the fight against Chinese aggression.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A poll released this month found the highest ever rate of American support for Taiwan.
