Gavin Newsom <\/a>when Trump was in office, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/states\/california\/story\/2021\/08\/23\/democrats-sweat-turnout-disaster-in-california-without-trump-to-run-against-1390415\">according<\/a>&nbsp;to Politico. However, a recent CBS News-YouGov poll <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1I50LLKPg-nOZdhn8Qa7zziU3i1MZl3SD\/view\">found<\/a> that those who voted for then-presidential candidate Joe Biden were less likely than Trump supporters to be closely following the <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/08\/11\/gavin-newsom-reporters-rant-recall\/\">recall<\/a>&nbsp;election and feel less motivated to vote.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" readability=\"5.9867549668874\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Democrats sweat turnout disaster in California without Trump to run against <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/BRNJLIIYPO\">https:\/\/t.co\/BRNJLIIYPO<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Jeremy B. White (@JeremyBWhite) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JeremyBWhite\/status\/1430196460876754952?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 24, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Moreover, registered Democrats and independent voters were about 30% less likely than Republicans to vote in the election, <a href=\"https:\/\/escholarship.org\/uc\/item\/27x9k5qt\">according<\/a> to a Berkeley-IGS survey.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think he pulls it out,\u201d Antonio Villaraigosa, the Democratic former mayor of Los Angeles, reportedly said of Newsom. \u201cBut it\u2019s going to be close. It shouldn\u2019t be. But it\u2019s going to be very, very close because Republicans are animated, and we\u2019re not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan Democrats win without having Trump as their foil? This is the challenge,\u201d said Gray Davis, the former California governor who was recalled in 2003, according to Politico. \u201cWe\u2019re going to find out pretty soon.\u201d <strong><u><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/08\/11\/nancy-pelosi-gavin-newsom-recall-election-children-other-living-things\/\">(RELATED: Pelosi Calls Newsom \u2018A Great Governor,\u2019 Says Recall Election Is \u2018Not Good For Children Or Other Living Things\u2019)<\/a><\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey want Trump to be on the ballot. That\u2019s the whole thing. That\u2019s the whole premise of the campaign,\u201d said Democratic strategist Darry Sragow, according to Politico.&nbsp;\u201cFrom the beginning, the fundamental premise of the anti-recall strategy has been that this is a referendum on Donald Trump, not on Gavin Newsom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2018, Newsom beat his Republican opponent John Cox by 3 million votes as a first-term Democrat and in 2020, Joe Biden beat Trump by about 30 percentage points, according to Politico.
