Local news <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.9news.com.au\/national\/baby-health-cardiac-services-adelaide-push-after-several-deaths\/9f16f6cc-35c4-4491-b50b-382b2febbbf3\"><span>outlets<\/span><\/a><span> have reported that this means that approximately 100 babies are sent to other states for treatment every year, usually to the Royal Children\u2019s Hospital in Melbourne, 450 miles to the South East.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cBecause of COVID-19 lockdown restrictions, however, Melbourne no longer remains an option. Patients must be sent to Sydney instead,\u201d FEE reported, with Sydney being 850 miles to the East.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This difference equates to an extra 45 minutes in flight time, which can have a huge impact when it comes to a sick infant whose survival can depend on treatment received within minutes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe infants never left Adelaide, news reports indicate, presumably because doctors either determined they would not survive the lengthy trip or because Sydney\u2019s Children\u2019s Hospital at Westmead \u2014 the lone hospital available due to travel restrictions \u2014 lacked the capacity to treat them,\u201d FEE added, meaning that \u201cthe infants failed to receive treatment that could have saved their lives.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Dr. John Svigos, who is an obstetrician and gynecologist, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.9news.com.au\/national\/baby-health-cardiac-services-adelaide-push-after-several-deaths\/9f16f6cc-35c4-4491-b50b-382b2febbbf3\"><span>told<\/span><\/a><span> Australian news media that these babies \u201calmost certainly\u201d would have benefited from on-site surgery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cParticularly in our current COVID situation where the usual process of referral to the Melbourne cardiac unit is no longer tenable and referral to Sydney is on a case-by-case basis,\u201d said Svigos. \u201cI shall leave it to you to imagine the profound effect of these deaths on the parents, their families and the dedicated medical and nursing staff dealing with these tragedies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"9.1007194244604\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Four Newborns in Adelaide have died after being denied lifesaving heart surgery because it wasn&#8217;t available in Adelaide, and they couldn&#8217;t be transferred interstate because of travel restrictions. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/9News?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#9News<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/IFZsv9kq4k\">pic.twitter.com\/IFZsv9kq4k<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 9News Australia (@9NewsAUS) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/9NewsAUS\/status\/1318632532716457986?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 20, 2020<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>This news comes as Australian officials impose widespread COVID-19 restrictions across the country, which have resulted in various extreme consequences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>One such example <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/shelter-dogs-about-to-be-rescued-in-australia-shot-dead-to-keep-volunteers-from-leaving-homes-to-pick-them-up\"><span>includes<\/span><\/a><span> the \u201c<\/span><span>shooting deaths of several dogs who were about to be rescued by a shelter \u2014 because a rural council didn\u2019t want volunteers to travel to pick up the dogs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Sydney Morning Herald <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/amp.smh.com.au\/national\/nsw\/rescue-dogs-shot-dead-by-nsw-council-due-to-covid-19-restrictions-20210821-p58ksh.html?__twitter_impression=true\"><span>reported<\/span><\/a><span> that the Bourke Shire Council in Australia\u2019s New South Wales interpreted the country\u2019s COVID-19 restrictions in the harshest terms possible, killing the dogs \u201cto prevent volunteers at a Cobar-based animal shelter from traveling to pick up the animals last week.\u201d Australia is currently enforcing an extreme lockdown to combat the Delta variant.
