(Photo by Alex Wong\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h5>OAN Newsroom<br \/>UPDATED 12:34 PM PT \u2013 Monday, August 23, 2021<\/h5>\n<p>Nearly a decade after an earthquake rattled the eastern United States, restoration efforts for the Washington National Cathedral have been estimated to take another 10 years. On August 23, 2011, a 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck 87 miles southwest of Washington and was felt as far as Georgia and Montreal.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview last week, the cathedral\u2019s head stonemason, Joe Alonso, said the greatest amount of damage was limited to three of the four pinnacles that covered the main tower.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe gothic structure with all these fine elements that you see here, all these spires and pinnacles. So that energy kept going,\u201d he explained. \u201cIt just popped like the cracking of a whip and that\u2019s why you see the damage is most extreme up high, especially at the very top of the central tower, which is three hundred feet up in the air.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Today is the 10th anniversary of the 5.3 magnitude earthquake that rocked DC area. Another $17 million would be needed to complete the job.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re raising the money. It was $34 million dollars in damage what we estimated,\u201d Alonso stated. \u201cWe\u2019re 10 years into the earthquake now and we\u2019re about halfway done with the repairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the guiding principles with the preservation and restoration work for the landmark have been to save as much original material as possible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVery meticulous, time consuming work. It\u2019s just the nature of this work. Everything is handmade, hand done,\u201d Alonso explained. \u201cSo it\u2019s just very laborious and time-consuming, but that is how the Cathedral was built.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The grand pinnacles of the transepts suffered heavy damage. The south transept damage is among the worst the Cathedral sustained.
