Bush, Burns served as U.S.\u00a0ambassador to NATO and\u00a0under secretary of state for political affairs,\u00a0historically the State Department\u2019s third-ranking official. He was also U.S. ambassador to Greece under President Bill Clinton. Burns is currently a professor of international relations at Harvard University\u2019s Kennedy School of Government.<\/p>\n<p>Burns faces Senate confirmation at a time when countering threats posed by the Chinese regime enjoys rare bipartisan support in Congress. The Biden administration, meanwhile, is rallying allies to push back against Beijing over a range of issues from its human rights abuses to its military aggression in the South China Sea.<\/p>\n<p>While Burns is not seen as a China policy specialist, neither were the previous four U.S. ambassadors to Beijing. The post has been vacant since October, after former President Donald Trump\u2019s envoy to China, Terry Branstad, stepped down.<\/p>\n<p>Burns, however, has ties to Biden, having served as an adviser to his election campaign, and has worked closely over the years with some of Biden\u2019s most trusted advisers, including Secretary of State Antony Blinken.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, the Chinese regime\u2019s new envoy to the United States, Qin Gang, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/chinas-new-ambassador-to-the-us-tones-down-rhetoric-days-after-testy-us-china-meetings_3924884.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">arrived<\/a> in Washington, pledging to get U.S.\u2013China relations \u201cback on track\u201d amid heightening tensions.
