So when actress Nicole Kidman arrived in the country on August 12 in a private jet from Sydney to start work on her new Amazon series, she should have been required to complete three weeks of quarantine in a hotel. Instead, the 54-year-old was immediately seen out and about in the city, prompting widespread questions about how she was able to circumvent the rule.<\/p>\n<p>Hong Kong\u2019s Commerce and Economic Development Bureau said in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.info.gov.hk\/gia\/general\/202108\/19\/P2021081900509.htm\">statement<\/a> that the actress and some of her crew were granted special dispensation to forgo the requirement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe case in discussion has been granted permission to travel to Hong Kong with a quarantine exemption for the purpose of performing designated professional work,\u201d the statement said, adding that the government \u201c[took] into account that it is conducive to maintaining the necessary operation and development of Hong Kong\u2019s economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the French news outlet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/live-news\/20210819-kidman-quarantine-exemption-sparks-anger-in-hong-kong\">France 24<\/a>, &nbsp;Facebook support groups for those quarantining in Hong Kong have been filled with angry comments about the preferential treatment Kidman received. One pro-Beijing official said that she had been inundated with \u201cconcerns over the quarantine exemption granted by the government to actress Nicole Kidman.\u201d She also revealed she has \u201creceived quite a number of complaints from Hong Kong residents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ironically, the incident seems like it could be a storyline on the show Kidman is the country to film. Titled \u201cExpats,\u201d and based on a novel by Janice Y. K. Lee, it focuses on the lives of wealthy and privileged American women living in Hong Kong\u2019s financial district.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/hongkongfp.com\/2021\/08\/19\/hong-kong-exempts-actor-nicole-kidman-from-covid-quarantine-as-amazons-tone-deaf-expat-tv-shows-see-backlash\/\">Hong Kong Free Press<\/a>, the show is going into production \u201cat a time of frequent arrests and daily political pressure on a flagging pro-democracy movement\u201d and is being criticized as \u201ctone-deaf.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mary Hui, a Quartz reporter who covers geopolitics and business in Asia, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/maryhui\/status\/1428293309718405123?s=20\">said<\/a> on Twitter, \u201cIt\u2019s bad enough that Amazon is backing two whole shows about the glam lives of [Hong Kong] ex-pats while many [Hong Kongers] are trying to flee a crackdown. Now add quarantine exceptionalism for Nicole Kidman, who apparently helps maintain\u2019 the [Hong Kong] economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>France 24\u2019s Hong Kong correspondent Oliver Farry <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ofarry\/status\/1428148569316286464?s=20\">quipped<\/a>, \u201cAllowing Nicole Kidman to skip quarantine to film a TV show that is certain to burnish Hong Kong\u2019s image among impressionable Westerners at a time the city is locking Hongkongers up makes a lot of sense now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Finally, popular independent tech blogger Jane Manchun Wong <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wongmjane\/status\/1428041807334543366?s=20\">observed<\/a>, \u201cOlympic medalists are required to quarantine in HK but Nicole Kidman doesn\u2019t because she is a Hollywood star and needs to film \u2018EXPATS\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So far neither Kidman nor Amazon has commented on the controversy.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
