Republicans are hailing the victory as a preview of the 2022 congressional midterms, and are hoping that it will signal their continued viability with suburban voters. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/08\/poll-78-capitol-hill-staffers-gop-take-back-house-senate-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: POLL: 78% Of Capitol Hill Staffers Believe GOP Will Take Back The House In 2022)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Gevanter also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alexisgevanter.com\/issues\">supported<\/a> universal absentee voting and state funding for Planned Parenthood.<\/p>\n<p>Fazio\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courant.com\/breaking-news\/hc-br-greenwich-farifield-county-senate-election-20210818-za4o6owwerbl7e6owkoef6yw7q-story.html\">messaging<\/a> focused primarily on government spending and deregulation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the recipe, ultimately, for statewide victory for Republicans is to continue to do better in places like the Naugatuck Valley and eastern Connecticut but also stop the losses or reverse the losses in lower Fairfield County,\u201d Fazio <a href=\"https:\/\/ctmirror.org\/2021\/08\/17\/ryan-fazio-reclaims-36th-senate-district-for-gop-greenwich\/\">told<\/a> The CT Mirror. \u201cThis is not a Connecticut-specific trend, this is a national trend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Naugatuck Valley and eastern Connecticut were some of the first places in the U.S. to <a href=\"https:\/\/millmuseum.org\/population-growth\/\">industrialize<\/a> in the early 19th century, hosting steel and textile mills. The areas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/23699718\">deindustrialized<\/a> over the course of the 20th century.<\/p>\n<p>Greenwich, Stamford, and New Canaan are wealthy suburbs of New York City that have swung Democratic in recent years. The 36th State Senate District has a median household <a href=\"https:\/\/censusreporter.org\/profiles\/61000US09036-state-senate-district-36-ct\/\">income<\/a> of more than $159,000.<\/p>\n<p>Biden gained 61.8% of the vote in the 36th District in 2020, compared to 36.6% for Trump, <a href=\"https:\/\/elections-daily.com\/2021\/08\/11\/suburban-reversion-a-test-case-on-connecticuts-gold-coast-in-sd36\/\">according<\/a> to Elections Daily. Fazio also ran for the seat in 2020 but lost to Democrat Alex Kasser, 51.4%-48.6%. Kasser resigned from the seat due to an acrimonious divorce.<\/p>\n<p>Fewer than 18,000 people voted in the Tuesday special election, 39,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Connecticut_State_Senate_District_36\">fewer<\/a> than the 2020 regularly scheduled election. Like Fazio, Villalobos <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/07\/republicans-win-texas-mayoral-races-latino-support\/\">won<\/a> in a traditionally Democratic area, the Rio Grande Valley, where Biden won by 15 percentage points. Villalobos also benefited from low turnout, as fewer than 10,000 people <a href=\"https:\/\/www.valleycentral.com\/news\/local-news\/javier-villalobos-wins-mcallen-mayor-election\/\">voted<\/a> in the mayoral election.
