More than a third said they opposed leaving, up from 16% four months ago.<\/p>\n<p>Biden announced in May that troops would leave Afghanistan, imposing a Sept. 11 deadline in a bid to end the longest war in American history. But the exit unfolded in frenzied fashion as the Taliban <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/08\/15\/taliban-islamic-emirate-of-afghanistan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">closed in on Kabul<\/a>, the Afghan capital, in a matter of days, risking the security of Americans still in the city and thousands of Afghans who aided U.S. troops over the 20-year war.<\/p>\n<p>While Biden said he was surprised at how quickly the Taliban were able to regain power, he <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/08\/16\/joe-biden-address-nation-afghanistan-taliban\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">defended his decision<\/a> in a speech Monday.<\/p>\n<p>This did unfold more quickly than we anticipated,\u201d Biden admitted, noting that Afghan troops \u201ccollapsed, sometimes without trying to fight,\u201d and that \u201cAfghanistan\u2019s political leaders gave up and fled the country.\u201d&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/08\/15\/taliban-fighters-enter-kabul-afghan-president-ashraf-ghani-flees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Taliban Take Presidential Palace As Afghan President Flees)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI stand squarely behind my decision,\u201d he later said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7262046\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" readability=\"33\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7262046\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-7262046 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/GettyImages-1334530911-scaled-1.jpg\" alt=\"President Joe Biden gives remarks the Afghanistan withdrawal from the East Room of the White House on Monday. Republican support stood at 31%, down 21 points, while Independent support fell from 61% to 44%.<\/p>\n<p>One quarter of respondents said they believed the withdrawal was going at least somewhat well, compared to 57% who said the opposite.<\/p>\n<p>The 1,999-person poll was conducted from Aug. 13-16, finishing one day after the Taliban successfully seized the capital.
