The U.S. took over security at the airport over the weekend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Pentagon confirmed on Monday that U.S. soldiers shot and killed two armed men who<\/span><span> fired on U.S. troops at the airport.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"5.2436974789916\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">People hanging on to plane at Kabul airport <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/TSoiI2tuHC\">pic.twitter.com\/TSoiI2tuHC<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Lisa Bennatan (@LisaBennatan) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LisaBennatan\/status\/1427204877546033152?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 16, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>Additionally, at least three Afghans who were holding on to the side of an Air Force jet were killed when they were run over, U.S. officials said, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/three-killed-in-kabul-airport-as-afghans-scramble-to-escape-taliban-11629096273\">according<\/a> to the Wall Street Journal. Several Afghans also plummeted to their deaths after they clung to the side of a U.S. Air Force C-17 transport plane and held on even as the plane took off and gained altitude.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Video of the chaos on the ground at the airport showed dozens of panicked Afghans running alongside the U.S. plane as it took off. Later, people could be seen in the distance falling from the plane after it had already taken off.<\/p>\n<p>Afghan President Ashraf Ghani said he fled the country on Sunday. The Taliban took over the country\u2019s capital and the presidential palace in Kabul later that day with little resistance. Ghani\u2019s current whereabouts are unknown.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the Afghanistan security forces trained by the U.S. either fled or blanched in the face of the Taliban\u2019s advances across the country. Some brokered ceasefire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/taliban-surge-exposes-failure-us-efforts-build-afghan-army-2021-08-15\/\">deals<\/a> with the terrorists to hand over their weapons and equipment. Ultimately, the security forces failed to stop the Taliban as they took over every major city in Afghanistan at a speed that appears to have left American officials\u2019 heads spinning.<\/p>\n<p>As recently as June, Secretary of State Antony Blinken predicted that a Taliban takeover of Afghanistan would not happen suddenly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think it is going to be something that happens from a Friday to a Monday,\u201d Blinken said on June 7. \u201cSo I wouldn\u2019t necessarily equate the departure of our forces in July, August, or by early September with some kind of immediate deterioration in the situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, Blinken took a different tack, blaming the \u201cinability of Afghan security forces to defend their country\u201d for the country\u2019s swift fall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve known all along that the Taliban was at its strongest position in terms of its strength since 2001,\u201d the secretary of state <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Breaking911\/status\/1426975397707751424\">said<\/a>, adding, \u201cwe\u2019ve said all along including back then that there was a real chance that the Taliban would make significant gains throughout Afghanistan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Embassy in Kabul was evacuated over the weekend, the American flag at the embassy coming down on Sunday as the evacuation process was completed.<\/p>\n<p>By Monday, President Biden had authorized a total of 7,000 troops to handle the situation in Afghanistan as the U.S. completes its withdrawal.<\/p>\n<p><i><span>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
