This week, Reps. Bill Posey (R-Fla.) and Tim Ryan (D-Ohio) introduced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/117th-congress\/house-bill\/5003?q=%7B%22search%22%3A%5B%22congressId%3A117+AND+billStatus%3A%5C%22Introduced%5C%22%22%5D%7D&amp;s=1&amp;r=9https:\/\/spacecoastdaily.com\/2021\/08\/rep-bill-posey-calls-on-hhs-secretary-to-grow-national-stockpile-of-important-pharmaceuticals\/\">H.R. 5003<\/a>, a bill aimed at decreasing American dependence on often-contaminated Chinese pharmaceuticals.<\/p>\n<p>While the problem has existed for decades, the shock to the medical infrastructure system caused by the coronavirus, brought to light how devastating it can be to a nation that must depend on other nation\u2019s products and mood in order to survive. According to the pair, 80 percent of U.S. pharmaceuticals come from overseas manufacturers and distributors.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\u2019s (CDC) most recent report on antibiotic prescriptions showed that penicillin is the most commonly prescription antibiotic class with nearly 59 million prescriptions written in 2019 alone. However, the U.S. hasn\u2019t domestically produced penicillin since 2004.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Working with <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepTimRyan?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@RepTimRyan<\/a> to protect Americans from contaminated foreign pharmaceuticals <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ksKC0ZKXoy\">https:\/\/t.co\/ksKC0ZKXoy<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Bill Posey (@congbillposey) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/congbillposey\/status\/1425160743658434561?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 10, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Yet, this isn\u2019t the first time Posey has raised the alarm regarding America\u2019s dependence on Chinese pharmaceuticals. During the last legislative session, Posey introduced the <a href=\"https:\/\/posey.house.gov\/news\/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=396955\">Safe Medicine Act<\/a> and explained to the House China Task Force exactly how serious the issue is.<\/p>\n<p>Posey went on to add that not only does China have a near monopoly on the U.S. pharmaceutical supply, but they are willing to use it as a retaliatory measure if they so choose. Posey warned a similar fate could await the U.S. if immediate action isn\u2019t taken. His evidence to the task force appeared compelling as Ohio Rep.
