The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) receives its data on both from local, state and territorial health departments, which get their data from hospitals, health care providers and laboratories.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Misinformation related to official COVID-19 death and case statistics have circulated on social media throughout the pandemic. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?fbid=10220250027225254&amp;set=a.4529047308654&amp;type=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">This particular post<\/a> attempts to suggest both are totally fake, with what appears to be a play on one of Twitter\u2019s labels for <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.twitter.com\/en_us\/topics\/company\/2020\/2020-election-changes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">misleading<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.twitter.com\/en_us\/topics\/product\/2020\/updating-our-approach-to-misleading-information\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">information<\/a> beneath its inaccurate claim.<\/p>\n<p>The CDC makes data on both COVID-19 deaths and cases <a href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#datatracker-home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">publicly available<\/a> and, contrary to the post\u2019s claim, the statistics provided aren\u2019t fake. The COVID-19 case and death statistics on the <a href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#cases_casesper100klast7days\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">COVID Data Tracker<\/a>&nbsp;are reported to the CDC by local, state and territorial health departments through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nndss\/about\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System<\/a>. Those public health departments get the data from hospitals, health care providers and laboratories, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/covid-data\/faq-surveillance.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CDC website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The CDC\u2019s National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) also provides <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/nvss\/vsrr\/COVID19\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">provisional COVID-19 death counts<\/a> based on death certificate data submitted by local and state jurisdictions. The NCHS provisional COVID-19 death counts \u201cmay not match counts from other sources\u201d and often lag a couple weeks behind other data because of the time it takes to complete death certifications and the different rates at which states report the data, among other reasons, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/nvss\/vsrr\/COVID19\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CDC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As of Aug. 12, there have been over 36.2 million COVID-19 cases and over 617,000 deaths in the U.S. since Jan. 21, 2020, according to the CDC\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#cases_all-rate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">COVID Data Tracker<\/a>.&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/08\/09\/fact-check-cdc-rochelle-walensky-covid-vaccines-failing-viral-load\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Viral Image Claims The CDC Director Said COVID-19 Vaccines Are \u2018Failing\u2019)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The CDC isn\u2019t the only organization that tracks COVID-19 case and death statistics. For example, The New York Times publishes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2021\/us\/covid-cases.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">U.S. COVID-19 case and death statistics<\/a> based on data released by local and state health officials, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2020\/us\/about-coronavirus-data-maps.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">its website<\/a>. Johns Hopkins University <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/CSSEGISandData\/COVID-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">also aggregates data<\/a> from various public health agencies in the U.S. and around the world to create <a href=\"https:\/\/coronavirus.jhu.edu\/map.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">its COVID-19 maps<\/a>.&nbsp;The <a href=\"https:\/\/coronavirus.jhu.edu\/map.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Johns Hopkins University Coronavirus Resource Center<\/a> reports there have been over 205 million COVID-19 cases and over 4.3 million deaths globally, at the time of publication.<\/p>\n<p>The notion that COVID-19 death statistics are \u201ctotally fake\u201d is inconsistent with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2020\/04\/21\/world\/coronavirus-missing-deaths.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">excess mortality data<\/a>. An analysis by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/graphic-detail\/coronavirus-excess-deaths-tracker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Economist<\/a> found that the COVID-19 death statistics reported in many countries are likely undercounts.
