According to official Customs and Border Protection (CBP) statistics, agents encountered&nbsp;212,672 illegal immigrants at the border in the month of July \u2014 a shocking, 13% increase over the number of migrants apprehended in the month of June.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA couple of days ago I was down in Mexico, and I said look, you know, if, if our borders are the first line of defense, we\u2019re going to lose and this is unsustainable,\u201d Mayorkas said Thursday in a meeting with border patrol agents, according to Fox News\u2019 Bill Melguin, who came into possession of the audio&nbsp;\u201cWe can\u2019t continue like this, our people in the field cant continue and our system isn\u2019t built for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mayorkas appears, in the recording, to be reassuring CBP that things will change, though he is clear that agents must make sure that the situation comes under control.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMayorkas told the agents that the current border situation \u2018cannot continue,&#8217;\u201d Fox News reported Friday. \u201cHe said the federal government\u2019s system was not designed to handle such an influx of migrants as the U.S. has seen in recent months and he was \u2018very well\u2019 aware that the sector recently came close to \u2018breaking.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s our responsibility to make sure that that never happens again,\u201d Mayorkas can be heard saying. \u201cThe extent of the challenge should not be understated, but nor should our ability to meet it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Biden administration recently released a plan to handle illegal immigration, but the proposal focused on addressing \u201croot causes\u201d of migrants from Mexico and Central America, and the solutions proposed were largely financial in nature.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, confirming earlier reports of a major surge at the border, the Department of Homeland Security announced that apprehensions at the border are increasing, even though apprehensions typically decrease over the hot summer months. The flow of unaccompanied minors, which briefly slowed, appears to be increasing again alongside illegal immigration generally. In July, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/national-news\/articles\/2021-08-06\/one-day-total-of-child-migrants-crossing-border-hits-reported-high-under-biden\">US News and World Report indicates<\/a>, the number of child migrants again hit record highs. Border agents took nearly 900 children into custody during a single day in July \u2014 the most ever.<\/p>\n<p>Although DHS has kept the notorious \u201cTitle 42\u201d immigration provision in place, allowing it to continue to expel apprehended illegal immigrants without extensive processing over concerns they could spread COVID-19, fewer than half of the immigrants apprehended were turned back under the provision: <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BillFOXLA\/status\/1425881637187854337?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1425881637187854337%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Ftwitchy.com%2Fdougp-3137%2F2021%2F08%2F12%2Fbill-melugins-border-report-sinks-biden-admin-claim-that-most-who-cross-illegally-are-being-sent-back%2F\">around 97,000 of the 212,000 encountered<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/immigration-border-migrant-apprehensions-alejandro-mayorkas\/\">CBS reported on Thursday<\/a> that around 83,000 migrant children and families have been approved to seek asylum in the United States.
