The president said he wants Medicare to directly negotiate drug prices and called for giving out penalties if a drugmaker raises prices at an amount that exceeds inflation, NBC News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/white-house\/biden-calls-congress-tackle-soaring-prices-prescription-drugs-n1276678\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class>\u201cThis isn\u2019t a partisan issue. Alzheimer\u2019s, diabetes, cancer \u2014 they don\u2019t care whether you\u2019re a Democrat or Republican,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/07\/09\/joe-biden-executive-order-big-tech-antitrust-competition\/\">Biden<\/a> said during Thursday\u2019s remarks. \u201cThis is another area where we can come together to make a difference in people\u2019s lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/04\/13\/biden-fda-abortion-drugs-by-mail\/\">Drugmakers<\/a> have pushed back on reducing prices, and Biden complained that \u201cthe price of many prescription drugs has dramatically outpaced inflation.\u201d He touted his Build Back Better agenda, promising it will solve issues such as rising drug prices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo really solve the problem, we need Congress to act,\u201d the president said. \u201cThat\u2019s what my Build Back Better plan will do. There\u2019s long been talk since I was back in the Senate about giving Medicare the power to negotiate lower drug prices. Medicare takes care of millions of people. Medicare, my plan is going to allow that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Biden noted that through his plan, the cost seniors spent on prescription drugs per year would be capped at a maximum of $3,000 a year. He also said prices negotiated by Medicare would also be open to those who have private company-based insurances.<\/p>\n<p>Some lawmakers have pushed for allowing Medicare to negotiate for only the expensive drugs, but Biden wants the health insurance program to have free reign, NBC News noted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCongress is currently debating more narrow vision \u2013 letting Medicare negotiate some of the most expensive drugs, particularly from those companies that don\u2019t face competition for that drug,\u201d Biden pointed out. \u201cWe\u2019re going to provide the competition through Medicare. Medicare is going to negotiate a fair price. Right now drug companies will set a price at whatever the market will bear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The president noted that he met with 12 companies back when he served as vice president. During the conversation, Biden asked what the companies would charge if they came up with a drug that cured a specific kind of cancer. The drug companies, Biden said, declared that they\u2019d price it as \u201cwhatever the market would bear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat often means a significant number of people can\u2019t afford it under any circumstance,\u201d the president said Thursday. \u201cThey\u2019ll die without it. That\u2019s unacceptable. What we\u2019re proposing \u2026 will negotiate based on a fair price, one that reflects the costs of the research and development and the need for providing for a significant profit, that\u2019s still affordable for consumers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The partisan $3.5 trillion reconciliation bill \u2013 which some Democrats want in tandem with the $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill \u2013 includes addressing the cost of prescription drugs. The reconciliation bill has sparked backlash among Republicans, and even some <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/08\/11\/joe-manchin-tom-cotton-critical-race-theory-vote-a-rama-amendment-budget-resolution\/\">Democrats<\/a> have expressed concern over its high price tag. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/08\/11\/joe-manchin-budget-kyrsten-sinema-senate\/\">(RELATED:&nbsp;Sen.
