New maps in pivotal states are expected to drop in the coming weeks and months as both parties brace for contentious legal battles in an attempt to limit their opponents\u2019 advantages.<\/p>\n<p>Thursday\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/programs-surveys\/decennial-census\/about\/rdo\/summary-files.2020.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">data<\/a> was released in a \u201clegacy format,\u201d meaning that they must be downloaded and converted to be adequately read by states\u2019 mapping software. That process alone could take anywhere from days to weeks.<\/p>\n<p>The release comes nearly four months after the Census Bureau announced which states were gaining or losing House seats for the next decade. (Photo by Mark Wilson\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Thursday\u2019s data was released earlier than expected, but <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/12\/31\/trump-census-bureau-misses-reporting-deadline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">months after it was originally planned<\/a> due to the coronavirus pandemic and <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/09\/25\/judge-rules-census-counting-continue-october\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">legal challenges<\/a> over who the census should count. It gives an indication of whether people of color were undercounted in certain regions and whether states need to draw majority black or Latino districts as required by the Voting Rights Act.<\/p>\n<p>Several critical states like Colorado, Michigan, Oregon and North Carolina face deadlines to submit their new maps in the coming weeks.
