And if you want to watch a basketball game, a baseball game, go to a concert at a big venue, or even go into a movie theater, you need to get a shot.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"9.4402985074627\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Today the Los Angeles City Council passed legislation to require proof of COVID-19 vaccinations for Angelenos to enter indoor public spaces. Your decision to remain unvaccinated doesn\u2019t just affect you\u2013it affects us all.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Nury Martinez (@CD6Nury) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CD6Nury\/status\/1425545789711867906?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 11, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Councilman O\u2019Farrell reportedly said if the proposal becomes law, it would not be a \u201cmandate\u201d because people would not be forced to get immunized or denied \u201cthe ability to access essentials.\u201d He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailynews.com\/2021\/08\/11\/la-city-council-moves-toward-vaccine-requirement-at-restaurants-businesses-other-public-spaces\/\">said<\/a> choosing not to get vaccinated is an \u201cimmoral\u201d act.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have endured 18 months of mass illness and death, with the latest variant wreaking havoc across the globe,\u201d O\u2019Farrell said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MitchOFarrell\/status\/1425528738842779649\">statement<\/a> posted on social media. \u201cThis is a necessary and sensible step that will broadly protect the health and safety of Angelenos. It could very well ward off another economic shutdown, which would be devastating to our city and our nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More details from The Times:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"24\">\n<p><em>As part of their 13-0 vote, council members directed city staff to gather input from businesses on what specific types of public spaces should be included in the ordinance, and also to meet with parents, teachers, pediatricians and child-care providers to discuss how best to protect children under the age of 12, who remain ineligible to receive the vaccine\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Some opponents wrote to council members denouncing the plan as overreaching, including people who dismissed the COVID-19 pandemic as a hoax or who argued that the vaccines were harmful. Many raised concerns about the emergency authorization for the shots or argued that so-called breakthrough infections in people who have been inoculated undermined the case for vaccines\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Residents who called into Wednesday\u2019s council meeting were largely opposed to the concept, with some saying they felt requiring vaccine verification was akin to segregation and would imperil the region\u2019s economic recovery by eroding the customer base for some businesses.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Councilmembers Joe Buscaino and John Lee were absent from the vote.
