Muhammad blamed the plight of black America on \u201csystemic racism\u201d and said AmEx must do more to combat its relationship with \u201cracial capitalism.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cSo, I first say that American Express has to do its own digging about how it sits in relationship to this history of racial capitalism,\u201d Muhammad said. \u201cWe didn\u2019t get to the wealth gap by virtue of a series of bad decisions and bad decisions and bad parenting by black boys, black people. We got there through exploitative extractive systemic racism.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>He encouraged the company \u2014 which made $2.3 billion in profit last quarter \u2014 to ignore profit and focus on addressing \u201csocietal imbalance.\u201d Muhammad insinuated that operating within a capitalist mindset made the company racist. This ideology is a core tenet of Critical Race Theory.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cYou might have to be willing to accept smaller profit margins in certain business lines, in order to do the kind of work to address societal imbalance,\u201d Muhammad said. \u201cIf American Express cares about racial justice in the world, it can\u2019t simply say the market\u2019s going to define how we price certain customers who happen to come from low-income communities.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIf you want to do good, then you\u2019re going to have to set up products and [product] lines that don\u2019t maximize profit,\u201d he continued.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Muhammad\u2019s speech came alongside AmEx\u2019s Critical Race Theory-inspired training. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realchrisrufo\/status\/1425485418187816961\"><span>Christopher Rufo<\/span><\/a><span>, AmEx executives created an \u201cAnti-Racism Initiative\u201d that forced employees to learn about \u201csystemic racism,\u201d \u201cwhite privilege,\u201d and \u201cintersectionality.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The company\u2019s framework to \u201cpromote racial equity and progress\u201d told employees that they must \u201csupport education on systemic racism &amp; inequality\u201d and \u201cparticipate in Amex affinity groups.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>One exercise asked employees to create an \u201cidentity map\u201d wherein they mapped out their race, sexual orientation, body type, religion, disability status, age, gender identity, and citizenship. This helped them to deconstruct their privilege.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Employees with more \u201cprivilege\u201d were directed to defer to individuals who have a more \u201cmarginalized\u201d status than themselves. They were specifically directed to not speak when a black or African-American person was speaking.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cDo more listening than speaking. When someone trusts you enough to share their personal experiences, believe what they\u2019re saying, and don\u2019t make assumptions or give unsolicited advice,\u201d the training reads. \u201cUse your voice to educate others, but don\u2019t speak over members of the Black and African-American community.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The training also insisted that employees were committing \u201cmicroaggressions\u201d if they questioned the semantics of \u201cBlack Lives Matter.\u201d The training told employees that saying, \u201cBlack Lives Matter?
