Version: 4.0.47--><div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Newsom-PGE.jpg?w=1200&amp;h=800&amp;ixlib=react-9.0.3\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\" \/><\/div>\n<p>An investigation by a Sacramento television station found California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom allegedly crafted policies to help the Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&amp;E) after it pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter for causing a massive fire in 2018 that killed 84 people.<\/p>\n<p>ABC10 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc10.com\/article\/news\/local\/abc10-originals\/newsom-pge-protection\/103-65ca1d41-8efe-45b4-87bc-0cdecc714378\">reported<\/a>, \u201cIn the months after the crime, Newsom not only signed new financial protections for PG&amp;E into law, his office hired private lawyers in New York who wrote the legislative language.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConfidential emails and documents obtained by ABC10 reveal the New York law offices of law firm O\u2019Melvany and Myers drafted AB 1054 in the Spring of 2019, before it was introduced in the state legislature,\u201d the ABC10 report said. \u201cThe law was written by the lawyers under a contract to represent Newsom\u2019s office in PG&amp;E\u2019s bankruptcy, state records show.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The outlet previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc10.com\/article\/news\/local\/california\/california-defends-pge-bailout-law\/103-88759c26-1f62-4c6f-8f17-8f8b823e5f35\">described<\/a> Assembly Bill 1054 as \u201ca law designed to bail out PG&amp;E.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/business\/energy-green\/story\/2019-10-24\/california-regulators-approve-funding-for-controversial-wildfire-law\">According<\/a> to the San Diego Union-Tribune, the law created \u201ca $21 billion wildfire fund that the state\u2019s big power companies can tap if their equipment ignites a fire that leads to significant damages, provided the commission determines the utilities acted responsibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"6.1318681318681\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">NEW only from <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ABC10?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@ABC10<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>Newsom\u2019s office crafted law protecting PG&amp;E after company\u2019s crimes killed 84 people | FIRE \u2013 POWER \u2013 MONEY Investigation<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/FirePowerMoney?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#FirePowerMoney<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/CampFire?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#CampFire<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/ZoggFire?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#ZoggFire<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/DixieFire?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#DixieFire<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/9Q4dEcbfug\">https:\/\/t.co\/9Q4dEcbfug<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Brandon Rittiman (@BrandonRittiman) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BrandonRittiman\/status\/1425290459333550080?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 11, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>ABC10 analyzed private emails that showed legislative staffers referred to AB 1054 as \u201cthe governor\u2019s bill on utility stability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More details from ABC10:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"18\">\n<p><em>After AB 1054 was already signed into law, drafting of legislation was added to an amended version of O\u2019Melvany\u2019s contract.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Payment records obtained through state transparency laws show O\u2019Melvany billed California taxpayers $3 million during the time when the law took shape.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Investment bank Guggenheim also participated in crafting AB 1054 and charged $3.7 million during that time.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Adding to&nbsp;concerns about a lack of independence of PG&amp;E\u2019s state regulators, the emails reveal that the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) was assigned to write sections of AB 1054 by Newsom\u2019s hired attorneys.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The ABC10 report said CPUC did not respond to a list of questions and \u201cis refusing to hand over its communications with key Newsom staffers around the time it waived a $200 million fine to help PG&amp;E exit bankruptcy.\u201d The outlet has sued the state agency to release the messages.<\/p>\n<p>Newsom\u2019s office \u201cdeclined or ignored at least ten interview requests on the PG&amp;E crisis\u201d over the past three years, the report said, and did not directly answer questions submitted by email.<\/p>\n<p>The governor\u2019s deputy press secretary Amelia Matier did provide ABC10 with a statement which reads, in part:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"13\">\n<p><em>No governor in California history has done more to hold PG&amp;E accountable and force the company to make fundamental change.
