The new policy takes effect August 12, and schools must be fully compliant by October 15, the order says.<\/p>\n<p>The governor made the announcement at an elementary school in Oakland.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo give parents confidence that their children are safe as schools return to full, in-person learning, we are urging all school staff to get vaccinated. Vaccinations are how we will end this pandemic,\u201d said Newsom in a statement. \u201cAs a father, I look forward to the start of the school year and seeing all California kids back in the classroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The San Francisco Chronicle <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/bayarea\/article\/Newsom-says-California-teachers-must-get-COVID-16379806.php\">characterized<\/a> the mandate as \u201ca reversal for Newsom, who said in recent days that he would not add educators to the list of those required to be vaccinated, which includes health workers and state employees.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"8.1949458483755\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">BREAKING: Gov. Unvaccinated or partially vaccinated workers \u201cmust be tested at least once weekly,\u201d it says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no substitution for in-person instruction, and California will continue to lead the nation in keeping students and staff safe while ensuring fully open classrooms,\u201d said Dr. Tom\u00e1s J. Arag\u00f3n, the state\u2019s top public health officer who signed the directive. \u201cToday\u2019s order will help the state\u2019s continued efforts to increase vaccinations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several labor unions back the new requirement. A press release from Newsom\u2019s office included statements from leaders representing the California Teachers Association, the California Federation of Teachers, and the Service Employees International Union.<\/p>\n<p>The policy change comes the day after Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, called for local education officials to mandate vaccinations for teachers. Some school districts in California had recently unveiled similar vaccination requirements, including San Francisco Unified and Long Beach Unified.<\/p>\n<p>The Los Angeles Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2021-08-10\/gov-newsom-expected-to-order-school-employees-to-get-vaccinated-or-be-tested-regularly\">notes<\/a>, \u201cNewsom had already announced a similar policy for employees of state agencies and an absolute mandate, with limited religious and medical exceptions, for state healthcare workers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe think this is the right thing to do and we think this is a sustainable way to keep schools open,\u201d Newsom said on Wednesday. \u201cAnd to address the No. 1 anxiety that parents like myself have \u2013 I have four young children \u2013 and that is knowing that the schools are doing everything in their power to keep their kids healthy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
