It would have prohibited President Joe Biden\u2019s administration from requiring financial institutions to report all transactions on accounts with a balance of more than $600.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe IRS financial institution reporting requirement forces financial institutions to turn over detailed bank account information to the IRS based on vague and \u2018flexible\u2019 criteria, such as a $600 threshold and account inflows and outflows, which are determined by the IRS,\u201d Crapo said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crapo.senate.gov\/media\/newsreleases\/crapo-files-amendment-to-protect-americans-privacy-from-intrusive-irs-reporting-regime-\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis time-draining burden disregards banking privacy in order to squeeze more resources out of responsible Americans and entrepreneurs,\u201d he continued. \u201cIt subjects law-abiding Americans to more intense targeting from the IRS and additional data collection, a concern that was recently amplified by a leak of private taxpayer information out of the IRS.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In June, investigative news outlet ProPublica <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/08\/internal-revenue-service-wealthy-americans-taxation-jeff-bezos\/\">obtained<\/a> a vast amount of federal tax data of several extremely wealthy Americans. IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finance.senate.gov\/hearings\/the-irss-fiscal-year-2022-budget\">warned<\/a> that if an agency official was responsible for the leak, they would be prosecuted. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/07\/27\/jim-jordan-darrell-issa-internal-revenue-service-propublica\/\">(RELATED: EXCLUSIVE: Reps. Jordan, Issa Demand Transparency From IRS Over \u2018Partisan\u2019 Leak Of Tax Records)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While the White House <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/press-briefings\/2021\/06\/08\/press-briefing-by-press-secretary-jen-psaki-deputy-director-of-the-national-economic-council-sameera-fazili-and-senior-director-for-international-economics-and-competitiveness-peter-harrell-june-8\/#:~:text=the%20irs%20commissioner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">condemned<\/a> the illegal leak of tax information, it also criticized the individuals whose tax information was leaked for evading taxes, touting Biden\u2019s plan to increase funding for the IRS.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7258290\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" readability=\"33\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7258290\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7258290\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/GettyImages-1233336168-scaled-1.jpg\" alt=\"IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig greets Ranking Member Sen. (Tom Williams\/Pool\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThere is more to be done to ensure that corporations, individuals who are at the highest income are paying more of their fair share, hence it\u2019s in the President\u2019s proposals, his budget, and part of how he\u2019s proposing to pay for his ideas,\u201d White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said in response to the ProPublica report.<\/p>\n<p>The budget resolution making its way through Congress <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finance.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/2021%20Final%20CPR%20testimony%20SFC%20BUDGET%20060821%20-1.pdf\">would provide<\/a> the IRS with $80 billion in additional funding over the next decade in an effort to prevent tax avoidance. Much of the funding will go toward hiring roughly 87,000 new workers, Politico <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2021\/05\/20\/irs-funding-boost-489830\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The regulation targeted by Crapo\u2019s amendment was introduced as part of the broader goal to clamp down on tax evasion, Rettig <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finance.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/2021%20Final%20CPR%20testimony%20SFC%20BUDGET%20060821%20-1.pdf#page=9\">said<\/a> during a Finance Committee hearing in June. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/30\/irs-unprocessed-tax-returns-backlog-pandemic\/\">(RELATED: IRS Faces Backlog Of 35 Million Unprocessed Tax Returns, Watchdog Finds)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have long been critical of big data collection activities, and oppose turning banks and brokers into government tax collectors,\u201d the Republican senator from Idaho said. \u201cMy amendment prevents the undue monitoring and reporting of sensitive American taxpayer information to the IRS by financial institutions about deposits and withdrawals made by any individual or business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Americans for Tax Reform (ATR), the Independent Community Bankers of America, the Credit Union National Association (CUNA), the American Bankers Association and the National Association of Federal Credit Unions all endorsed Crapo\u2019s amendment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCUNA remains concerned about the effect this proposed new requirement will have on credit unions,\u201d CUNA President Jim Nussle <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cuna.org\/uploadedFiles\/Advocacy\/Actions\/Comment_Calls,_Letters_and_Testimonies\/2021\/Letters\/072621_Crapo.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wrote<\/a> in a letter supporting Crapo\u2019s amendment. \u201cPrivacy and data security are paramount issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The massive multi-trillion-dollar legislative package would ultimately allow the IRS to \u201caudit and harass taxpayers,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atr.org\/atr-supports-crapo-amendment-prohibit-irs-financial-reporting-requirements\">according<\/a> to ATR.<\/p>\n<p>Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren has been a vocal proponent of proposals that would give the IRS greater access to Americans\u2019 financial information, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thinkadvisor.com\/2021\/05\/12\/warren-to-propose-that-banks-send-account-balances-to-irs\/\">according<\/a> to ThinkAdvisor.
