In July, Alabama head coach Nick Saban told a bunch of high school football coaches in Texas that quarterback Bryce Young was going to make \u201calmost seven figures\u201d before he even starts a game for the Crimson Tide.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Saban knows exactly what he\u2019s doing, making sure that recruits understand that the brand of Alabama football grants athletes an opportunity to make a lot of money off of their Name, Image, and Likeness.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThat number just blew me away,\u201d <\/span><span>Ole Miss<\/span><span> coach Lane Kiffin <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/college-football\/news\/nick-sabans-million-dollar-remark-about-bryce-young-again-proves-the-unmatched-savvy-of-alabamas-coach\/\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> when he heard the news. \u201cYou didn\u2019t prepare me for that. That\u2019s amazing. He made $1 million and hasn\u2019t started a game yet? Wow.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s obvious to me that Nick wanted to plant that and make sure people knew that,\u201d Stanford head coach David Shaw <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/story\/_\/id\/31911674\/sources-alabama-crimson-tide-qb-bryce-young-already-signed-800k-nil-deals\">said<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s a great way to recruit people to come to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span>It\u2019s the latest recruiting tool used by coaches of big name-brand schools in order to lure top high school athletes to their school. And it\u2019s not just Alabama that offers money-making potential.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Clemson quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei \u2014 who will be replacing Trevor Lawrence under center for the Tigers \u2014 has partnered with Dr. Pepper and will appear in their \u201cFansville\u201d ads during the college football season.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cFor me, NIL has been a great opportunity to be able to work with brands, to be able to do stuff like this,\u201d Uiagalelei <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/story\/_\/id\/32002991\/clemson-tigers-qb-dj-uiagalelei-partners-dr-pepper-fansville-ad-campaign\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> in an interview with ESPN.com. \u201cIf I was playing college football five years ago, I wouldn\u2019t be able to do this. It\u2019s a great opportunity for people now to be able to build off their brand, make money and work on different partnerships like Dr. Pepper. I\u2019m super excited about it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Dr. Pepper becomes the first major name-brand to partner with a college football player and will have the Clemson QB in their commercials starting August 23. The move by Dr. Pepper will assuredly get the attention of other major companies, kicking off the race to obtain the services of big-time college football players around the country.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re thrilled to have D.J. on board for one of Dr. Pepper\u2019s most exciting campaigns of the year,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/clemson-qb-dj-uiagalelei-signs-nil-with-dr-pepper-to-appear-in-fansville-commercials-151714261.html\">said<\/a> Andrew Springate, Dr. Pepper\u2019s chief marketing officer.<\/p>\n<p><span>The new NIL rules have completely changed college athletics after years of student-athletes unable to profit off of their success. Universities have profited off the popularity of their athletes for decades without having to compensate them for the part they play in the money-making industry of college sports.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In July, the Supreme Court cleared the way for college athletes to make money after <\/span><span>ruling in favor of a group of former and current college athletes over rules limiting compensation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThis is an important day for college athletes since they all are now able to take advantage of name, image, and likeness opportunities,\u201d NCAA President Mark Emmert <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncaa.org\/about\/resources\/media-center\/news\/ncaa-adopts-interim-name-image-and-likeness-policy\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cWith the variety of state laws adopted across the country, we will continue to work with Congress to develop a solution that will provide clarity on a national level. The current environment \u2014 both legal and legislative \u2014 prevents us from providing a more permanent solution and the level of detail student-athletes deserve.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to the NCAA <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncaa.org\/about\/resources\/media-center\/news\/ncaa-adopts-interim-name-image-and-likeness-policy\"><span>website<\/span><\/a><span>, \u201cThe policy provides the following guidance to college athletes, recruits, their families and member schools:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>Individuals can engage in NIL activities that are consistent with the law of the state where the school is located. Colleges and universities may be a resource for state law questions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>College athletes who attend a school in a state without an NIL law can engage in this type of activity without violating NCAA rules related to name, image, and likeness.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Individuals can use a professional services provider for NIL activities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Student-athletes should report NIL activities consistent with state law or school and conference requirements to their school.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>The new rules certainly give major college football brands \u2014 such as Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, etc. \u2014 an edge in recruiting, as more high schools players see major college football athletics making big money at brand-name universities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>Joe Morgan is the Sports Reporter for The Daily Wire.
