Cooperating Cultures. Creative Counter to Corporate Vultures. Oh, and cats. Can you find the cats?\u201d it says.<\/p>\n<p>Allusions to communism continue throughout the book. \u201c\u2018Radical Reds!\u2019 the headlines said,\u201d one page mocks. \u201cM stands for May Day,\u201d it says, referring to the holiday created by the Marxist International Socialist Congress.<\/p>\n<p>It appears to criticize the Democratic Party as too tame and liken Republicans to dictators, showing a picture of a red elephant and a blue donkey and saying: \u201cDictators Detest it. Donkeys Don\u2019t get it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cU is for Union. Union yes!\u201d and \u201cZ is for Zapitista of course,\u201d referring to the Zapatista National Liberation Front, a group of violent, masked socialist rebels in Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>It tells children that the purpose of education is to \u201cagitate,\u201d not to learn to do well on tests: \u201cOpen minds Operate best. Critical thinking Over tests. Wisdom can\u2019t be memorized. Educate! Agitate! Organize!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Read Aloud General #93: A is for Activist by Innosanto Nagara\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LCYHa9NxhVM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p>The lesson is part of <a href=\"https:\/\/goopenva.org\/about\">GoOpenVA<\/a>, a website registered to the Virginia Department of Education that \u201cencourages all Virginia educators and learners to create, share, and use digital resources with the end goals of providing equitable access to great learning materials throughout the state, and supporting new approaches to learning and teaching for all Virginians.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those seeking to indoctrinate children often pump content into such free-for-the-taking \u201clesson plan repositories,\u201d seemingly because some teachers will use them without much vetting to avoid doing the work of creating their own.<\/p>\n<p>The lesson plan also has children watch a video of the book \u201cSomething Happened In Our Town.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the book, a white police officer kills a black man, and a young black boy asks his family about it. \u201cHe won\u2019t go to jail,\u201d his father says. When the boy asks why, he is told it is because \u201cThey don\u2019t like Black men.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t always count on them to do what\u2019s right,\u201d his mother adds.<\/p>\n<p>A white girl, meanwhile, is told by her mother: \u201cSlaves had to do whatever White people told them to do. Even after slavery ended, White people didn\u2019t let Black people live where they wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid our family do those bad things a long time ago?\u201d asks Emma.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d answers her mother.<\/p>\n<p>A boy named Malcolm explains: \u201cI could get stopped by the police just because I\u2019m Black, even if I don\u2019t do anything wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat if it was a White man in the car?\u201d his brother asks.<\/p>\n<p>The father advises, \u201cThey probably wouldn\u2019t have even stopped the car.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The anti-police book was promoted even in the military town of Virginia Beach, where school board member Jessica Owens praised it on Facebook as \u201cpositive\u201d and \u201cage-appropriate,\u201d adding: \u201cOur children are mini sponges.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To make it enticing to teachers looking to check off boxes, each lesson on the GoOpenVA platform is marketed as fulfilling certain state educational standards. By instructing students to liken Black Lives Matter to Martin Luther King (after learning about him from a tumblr account), the lesson says teachers can take credit for fulfilling the \u201cLearning Domain: History and Social Science\u201d Standard: \u201cThe student will compare and contrast ideas and perspectives to better understand people or events in world cultures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though also ostensibly designed to teach art, that part appears tacked on as an afterthought. Students should spent 30 minutes \u201cusing technology \u2013 digital design, or 3D sculpture, or a photo collage, or a painting, or any response that represents the students [sic] feeling\/thoughts what [sic] a march represents,\u201d the lesson plan says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe artist (group or individual) needs to have the audience and purpose in mind and how it will represent their [sic] views of social justice,\u201d it says, continuing:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"10\">\n<p><em>Using 3rd grade objectives, listed above, the student will be assessed on at the end of the project<\/em><br \/><em>1. The student will be able to collaboratively discuss and example [sic] the social injustices as discussed\/show in one of the images in the book A is for Activist with their peers.<\/em><br \/><em>2. The student will observe\/discuss the similarities and differences between the MLK March and the BLM March and create a visual response to a March [sic]. (What do they both have in common\/connections? How could the 3rd grade students create a response to the BLM March?)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>GoOpenVA\u2019s website&nbsp;offers the Disclaimer, \u201cThe VDOE has not evaluated these resources for content nor accessibility but they have generally been reviewed by educational peers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But it also says&nbsp;the state Department of Education aims to expand the platform.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA statewide learning management system (LMS) is being developed to be the one-stop-shop for digital learning, offering vetted digital resources and online courses, facilitated by either local teachers or state-certified online teachers.
