Tommy Tuberville, came during the Senate\u2019s overnight vote-a-rama, a marathon session during <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/08\/10\/senate-debating-democrats-mammoth-3-5-trillion-budget-bernie-sanders-chuck-schumer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">consideration of Democrats\u2019 $3.5 trillion budget<\/a> where members can offer unlimited amendments. While the votes are non-binding, they can sometimes be politically tricky for senators as their colleagues force on-the-record positions on contentious issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy amendment is pretty simple,\u201d Tuberville said on the Senate floor. \u201cIf your city council wants to defund their police, don\u2019t expect the federal government to make up the difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was adopted 99-0. New Jersey Democratic Sen. Josh Hawley that provided federal funds to hire 100,000 new police officers nationwide, urging his colleagues to go beyond just stating their opposition to defunding the police.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI recognize that my friends across the aisle said they don\u2019t want to defund the police,\u201d Hawley said. \u201cThat\u2019s outstanding. Let\u2019s go a step further. Let\u2019s fund them.\u201d&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/08\/10\/senate-passes-infrastructure-package-dozen-republicans-join-dems-kyrsten-sinema-rob-portman-joe-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Senate Passes Largest Infrastructure Bill In Decades With Bipartisan Support)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Democrats immediately signaled their support, with Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin, the majority whip, likening the amendment to a provision once proposed by then-Sen. Joe Biden in the 1990s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are right,\u201d Durbin said. \u201cWe need 100,000 more police and we stand with Joe Biden\u2019s program and are glad that you\u2019ve joined us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Just Vermont Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders and Republican Sens.
