One explanation \u2014 which she says is \u201calmost surely the most neglected\u201d \u2014 is declining interest in God and religion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI see the consequences of this in my practice almost every day,\u201d explained Komisar. \u201cAnd this is not merely my personal observation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>She cited a Harvard study showing that children who attended a religious service at least once per week \u201cscored higher on psychological well-being measurements and had lower risks of mental illness.\u201d Weekly attendance was also linked to \u201chigher rates of volunteerism, lower probabilities of both drug use and early sexual initiation, and a sense of purpose.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Nevertheless, polls find that the United States has seen a 20% decrease in attendance at formal religious services over the past two decades. In 2018, the American Family Survey revealed that \u201cnearly half of adults under 30 do not identify with any religion.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cFrom a purely psychological point of view, this is not a good trend,\u201d commented Komisar. \u201cNihilism \u2014 the belief in nothing \u2014 is a rich fertilizer for anxiety and depression.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Komisar said that parents \u2014 even those who reject God \u2014 therefore have no other choice than to expose their children to the Lord.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Komisar is also \u201cfrequently asked how parents can instill gratitude and empathy in their children.\u201d Once again, she argues that the best answer is involvement in religion \u2014 which, beyond fostering the building blocks of strong character, protects against depression and anxiety.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAdditionally, religion provides children a chance for community,\u201d she discussed. \u201cBeing with people who share their faith can act as a buffer against the emptiness and isolation of modern culture. This is more necessary than ever in a world where teens can have hundreds of virtual friends and few real ones.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAnd religion helps teach children mindfulness, a sense of self-control, and discipline. Your young children might not be aware they are entering a house of worship, but they do know they\u2019re supposed to act in an appropriate manner when they are there.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Komisar pointed out that children\u2019s attitudes about God tend to follow those of their parents.
