This is very serious business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Fauci \u2014 an immunologist and director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases who served on former President Trump\u2019s White House Coronavirus Task Force and is now President Biden\u2019s chief medical adviser on COVID-19 \u2014 said the mandates shouldn\u2019t come from the federal government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re talking about local mandates, for schools, for teachers for universities for colleges,\u201d said Fauci. \u201cI\u2019m sorry. I know people must like to have their individual freedom and not be told to do something but I think we\u2019re in such a serious situation now that under certain circumstances mandates should be done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe obviously have to balance, you know, the discussion that we\u2019ve had now for, you know, over a year is to balance the negative impact on kids from keeping them out of school,\u201d Fauci said. He added that the new Delta variant could put children at risk, urging further steps to \u201csurround the children with people, who if they are eligible to be vaccinated, get vaccinated\u2026 if you want to be around children, you have to do whatever you can to protect them. If you\u2019re eligible to get vaccinated, get vaccinated since children of certain ages can\u2019t get vaccinated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fauci also said masks should return, too.&nbsp;\u201cI know a lot of people push back about that, but again, that\u2019s the weapon, if you want to call it that,\u201d he said. \u201cVaccinate those who can be vaccinated and wear masks in situations in which you have unvaccinated people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Already, nearly 90% of teachers and school staff have been vaccinated, <a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2021\/08\/02\/fact-sheet-reopening-schools-and-rebuilding-with-equity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"slk:according to the White House\" data-rapid_p=\"25\" data-v9y=\"1\">according<\/a> to the White House.&nbsp;But with the Delta variant now moving across the U.S., younger people have been getting the virus, <a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/delta-variant-more-dangerous-children-growing-number-kids-are-very-n1276035\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"slk:cases among younger people have been rising.\" data-rapid_p=\"26\" data-v9y=\"1\">according<\/a> to NBC News.<\/p>\n<p>American Federation of Teachers (AFT) President Randi Weingarten has run counter to other union leaders on vaccine mandates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn order for everyone to feel safe and welcome in their workplaces, vaccinations must be negotiated between employers and workers, not coerced,\u201d Weingarten said in a statement last week. \u201cWe believe strongly that everyone should get vaccinated unless they have a medical or religious exception, and that this should be a mandatory subject of negotiation for employers to keep their employees safe and build trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But in a Sunday appearance on NBC\u2019s \u201cMeet the Press,\u201d Weingarten said she would support mandatory vaccines for vaccines. \u201cI do think the circumstances have changed, and that vaccination is a community responsibility,\u201d Weingarten said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a matter of personal conscience, we need to be working with our employers\u2014not opposing them\u2014on vaccine mandates,\u201d Weingarten said.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
