The Pentagon chief said he came to the decision after consulting senior military leaders and the White House, and did so in an effort to help protect the armed forces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;To defend this nation, we need a healthy and ready force,&#8221; Austin <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/media.defense.gov\/2021\/Aug\/09\/2002826254\/-1\/-1\/0\/MESSAGE-TO-THE-FORCE-MEMO-VACCINE.PDF?source=GovDelivery\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span>. &#8220;I have every confidence that service leadership and your commanders will implement this new vaccination program with professionalism, skill, and compassion.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Almost immediately after Austin\u2019s statement, Biden told reporters he &#8220;strongly support[s] the move.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;Secretary Austin and I share an unshakable commitment to making sure our troops have every tool they need to do their jobs as safely as possible,&#8221; Biden <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PhilipWegmann\/status\/1424788560813641729?s=20\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span>. &#8220;Being vaccinated will enable our service members to stay healthy, to better protect their families, and to ensure that our force is ready to operate anywhere in the world.&#8221; The v<\/span><span>accination rate within the armed forces\u2014around 70 percent as of mid-July\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.military.com\/daily-news\/2021\/07\/16\/militarys-covid-vaccination-rate-lags-behind-pentagons-hopes.html\"><span>hovers<\/span><\/a> <span>significantly above that of the general population.
