\/><\/div>\n<p>Dr. Anthony Fauci says he leans \u201cstrongly\u201d toward mandating COVID-19 for all American teachers just as schools prepare to open for the 2021-2022 school year.<\/p>\n<p>Fauci, an immunologist and director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases who served on former President Trump\u2019s White House Coronavirus Task Force and is now President Joe Biden\u2019s chief medical adviser on COVID-19, says it comes down to a simple sense of \u201cobligation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The doctor says all those who are responsible for the safety and health of others should be vaccinated, \u201cbe that the development of a child in a school or in my position as a physician who still sees patients,\u201d Fauci, the White House medical advisor, said in an <a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\" href=\"https:\/\/eu.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/2021\/08\/08\/anthony-fauci-covid-vaccinate-mandate\/5507400001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"slk:USA Today published on Sunday\" data-rapid_p=\"24\" data-v9y=\"1\">interview<\/a> with USA Today published on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTherefore, I absolutely lean strongly toward when people are in those positions, if they don\u2019t want to get vaccinated, I would mandate that they get vaccinated,\u201d Fauci said.<\/p>\n<p>Already, nearly 90% of teachers and school staff have been vaccinated, <a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2021\/08\/02\/fact-sheet-reopening-schools-and-rebuilding-with-equity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"slk:according to the White House\" data-rapid_p=\"25\" data-v9y=\"1\">according<\/a> to the White House.&nbsp;But with the Delta variant now moving across the U.S., younger people have been getting the virus, <a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/delta-variant-more-dangerous-children-growing-number-kids-are-very-n1276035\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"slk:cases among younger people have been rising.\" data-rapid_p=\"26\" data-v9y=\"1\">according<\/a> to NBC News.<\/p>\n<p>American Federation of Teachers (AFT) President Randi Weingarten has run counter to other union leaders on vaccine mandates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn order for everyone to feel safe and welcome in their workplaces, vaccinations must be negotiated between employers and workers, not coerced,\u201d Weingarten said in a statement last week. \u201cWe believe strongly that everyone should get vaccinated unless they have a medical or religious exception, and that this should be a mandatory subject of negotiation for employers to keep their employees safe and build trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But in a Sunday appearance NBC\u2019s \u201cMeet the Press,\u201d Weingarten said she would support mandatory vaccines for vaccines. \u201cI do think the circumstances have changed, and that vaccination is a community responsibility,\u201d Weingarten said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a matter of personal conscience, we need to be working with our employers\u2014not opposing them\u2014on vaccine mandates,\u201d Weingarten said.<\/p>\n<p>Still, the largest U.S. union of teachers, the National Education Association (NAE), has not endorsed vaccine mandates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are often complex medical issues at play, and we don\u2019t presume to understand them all,\u201d President Becky Pringle said in a statement, <a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\" href=\"https:\/\/www.edweek.org\/teaching-learning\/teachers-unions-have-opposed-vaccine-mandates-but-that-may-change\/2021\/08\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"slk:Education Week reported on Thursday.\" data-rapid_p=\"33\" data-v9y=\"1\">according<\/a> to Education Week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone who can be vaccinated should be vaccinated and if they can\u2019t they should be tested on a regular basis,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>But some governors are opposing the mandates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter the governors of Florida and Texas banned local districts from requiring students to wear masks, U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona criticized them in a White House press conference Thursday, saying that keeping students and school staff safe shouldn\u2019t be politicized,\u201d Education Week reported. \u201cArkansas officials are also feuding&nbsp;over school mask mandates, and a judge in the state issued an injunction Friday that
