The union said they would prefer to wear face coverings and be subjected to weekly testing \u201cdue to religious and other beliefs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are all for COVID-19 safety and we back that,\u201d SFDSA President Kenneth Lomba told the San Francisco Chronicle. \u201cOur problem is how this mandate \u2013 \u2018vaccinate or you\u2019ll be terminated,\u2019 is really going to impact our staffing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, SFDSA called on city leaders to focus on crime rather than forcing law enforcement to get vaccinated.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"7.1052631578947\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">San Francisco sheriff&#8217;s duputy union says that officers will quit in large numbers of the city imposes a vaccine mandate. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Qb00sEnHqH\">pic.twitter.com\/Qb00sEnHqH<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Scott Morris (@OakMorr) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OakMorr\/status\/1423669572217950210?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 6, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cPublic safety of San Francisco has turned into the Wild West and will get worse when officers quit due to the vaccine mandate,\u201d the union posted on social media.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/bayarea\/article\/S-F-sheriff-s-deputies-threaten-resignations-16370801.php\">According<\/a> to The Chronicle, \u201cOfficials with the city\u2019s Department of Human Resources issued a Friday statement sharply denouncing the union\u2019s stance, particularly in light of the highly transmissible delta variant of the coronavirus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is also an undue and unacceptable health and safety risk that is imposed upon the city, our employees and the public we serve, by those who are not vaccinated against COVID-19,\u201d officials said, per The Chronicle. \u201cVaccines are safe, effective and readily available to our employees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Officials announced the vaccination requirement \u201cas a condition of employment\u201d last month after updating the city\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfdph.org\/dph\/alerts\/files\/C19-07-Safer-Return-Together-Health-Order.pdf\">public health order<\/a>. It includes limited exemptions for religious or qualifying medical reasons. At the time, SFDSA President Lomba responded with a <a href=\"https:\/\/abc7news.com\/coronavirus-san-francisco-health-order-vaccine-mandate\/10878547\/\">statement<\/a> that read, in part, \u201cOur African American and Hispanic members do not want to be forced to take vaccines due to the past history of vaccine abuse against minorities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More details from The Chronicle:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"23\">\n<p><em>Nancy Crowley, a spokesperson for the sheriff\u2019s department, said officials are working with the human resources department to obtain full compliance by the deadline. On Friday they released an internal video showing the undersheriff and assistant sheriff promoting vaccinations, and next week the department is holding a vaccination clinic at San Francisco\u2019s Hall of Justice.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe\u2019re trying to make it as easy for folks to access as possible,\u201d Crowley said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Union leaders with the city\u2019s fire and police departments did not confirm whether their members were also considering resigning in light of the order, but both said they wished the city had engaged labor leaders at the front end of the process.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>About 17% of police and 9.5% of fire department employees were not vaccinated as of Friday, according to city data.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Associated Press <a href=\"https:\/\/ktla.com\/news\/california\/san-francisco-sheriffs-deputies-threaten-to-quit-over-covid-19-vaccine-mandate\/\">reported<\/a> that the average unvaccinated rate across all San Francisco city departments is 7.7%.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/deputy-sheriffs-union-pushes-back-against-l-a-county-executive-order-requiring-proof-of-full-covid-19-vax\"><strong>Deputy Sheriffs Union Pushes Back Against L.A.
