The course will feature readings from an avowed Marxist and former Black Panther.<\/p>\n<p>The course description reads:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"14\">\n<p><em>This seminar traces the historical roots and growth of the Black Lives Matter social movement in the United States and comparative global contexts. The movement and course are committed to resisting, unveiling, and undoing histories of state sanctioned violence against Black and Brown bodies. The course seeks to document the forms of dispossession that Black Americans face, and offers a critical examination of the prison industrial complex, police brutality, urban poverty, and white supremacy in the US.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The College Fix <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/princeton-offers-blacklivesmatter-course-with-readings-by-an-avowed-marxist\/\">noted<\/a> that the course includes readings from \u201cFreedom is a Constant Struggle,\u201d written by Angela Davis. Davis, the Fix recalled, is \u201ca former Black Panther whose weapons were used in the kidnapping of a federal judge. She was acquitted of a kidnapping charge. Davis is also the 1979 \u2018Lenin Peace Prize\u2019 winner,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.heritage.org\/civil-society\/commentary\/angela-davis-and-the-distortion-diversity\">granted to her<\/a>&nbsp;by the Communist country of East Germany.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Fix also reported that the course is aligned with an organization whose stated mission is to end the \u201cnuclear family structure.\u201d It is also aligned with the official Black Lives Matter organization, which was started by unabashed Marxists. The Fix did not receive responses to inquiries from those associated with the course, including Professor Hanna Garth, who is set to teach.<\/p>\n<p>More from the Fix:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"26\">\n<p><em>One book students might read could be Garth\u2019s own book about \u201cblack food.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Last October, Garth wrote a book titled \u201cBlack Food Matters: Racial Justice in the Wake of Food Justice\u201d which gives an in-depth account of \u201cBlack food and the challenges it faces today.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cFor Black Americans, the food system is broken. When it comes to nutrition, Black consumers experience an unjust and inequitable distribution of resources,\u201d a summary of the book said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The book is a \u201ccomprehensive look at Black food culture and the various forms of violence that threaten the future of this cuisine, Black Food Matters centers Blackness in a field that has too often framed Black issues through a white-centric lens, offering new ways to think about access, privilege, equity, and justice,\u201d the summary said.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Garth\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hannagarth.com\/about.html\">personal website<\/a> describes her as \u201ca sociocultural and medical anthropologist I am most&nbsp;broadly interested in the ways in which people struggle to overcome structural violence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She says her most \u201crecent work is focused on the connections between food systems, structural inequalities, health, and wellbeing.\u201d More from Garth:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"11\">\n<p><em>This work has looked at the ways in which macro-level changes and shifts in local food distribution systems impact communities, families, and individuals.&nbsp; I have studied how&nbsp;food scarcity and reduced access to affordable food influence individual distress, and household and community dynamics.
