A memorandum signed by Biden on Thursday blocked the removal of Hong Kong residents who have sought a safe haven in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>Hong Kong residents in the U.S. have been permitted to work in the country for 18 months.<\/p>\n<p>Under new Chinese national security law, 100 activists, politicians and demonstrators have been arrested. Another 10,000 have been arrested in connection to antigovernment protests.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe strongly urge Beijing and Hong Kong authorities to cease their continued attacks on Hong Kong for exercising protected rights and freedoms,\u201d U.S. State Department Spokesman Ned Price expressed. \u201cThat includes the freedom of peaceful assembly and expression, and to allow people in Hong Kong to participate meaningfully in their own governance.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Beijing\u2019s sweeping national security law undermines freedom for people in Hong Kong.
